I think they've regained some credibility with this album. I absolutely despised the blandness of 'X&Y'. So it's good to see them shake things up on 'Viva La Vida'. There seems IMO to be a certain Peter Gabriel influence on some of the tracks.

Something I noticed, 'Cemeteries of London' sort of rips of 'House of the Rising Sun' by the Animals to such an extent that surely it MUST be credited on the album notes. If it wasn't deliberate then Chris Martin is a lunatic for not realising! I'm probably just being stupid and that was the whole point of the song.

I personally love X&Y, i hear people say yeah but its all the same cheap trick. Well personally i agree, but i see absolutely noting wrong with 12 amazing, yet similarly structured, songs. As long as each and every one is superb

I'm not gonna diss the older Coldplay albums like a lot of people seem to be doing recently. I've listened to them all a lot, and they all have merit to me.

However, I must admit on the first couple of listens Viva La Vida has struck me as something slightly less radio-friendly and more something they're having fun with.

I quite like the freedom of the album, as it's less predictable and certainly a little more experimental. Granted they've not gone TOO far away from the norm, but it's definitely different sounding, and something slightly fresher ..

I quite like it. The studio version of Lost is quite good, Life in Technicolour is a great opening track.

My favourite though has to be Death and All His Friends. Brilliant song, played 20 times today already. I wish there wasn't a hidden track stuck at the end though.

Apparently they decided to take Chris' vocals off "Life In Technicolour" because with them, it would have been too obvious a single. It's a great song without them.

It's quite good. It's the sound of a band trying to break out of a musical rut they had got themselves into with X&Y.

Granted it's not wildly experimental, but I like the different song structures, better lyrics, without sacrificing what they are good at a gift for melody.

My highlights are Lovers in Japan, Yes and the deliciously Afrobeat tinged Strawberry Swing. Which for me is the first time I can recall a Coldplay song being utterly joyous.

I'm just listening to the album on Myspace - it's absolutely amazing so far. Like the musical 'Life in Technicolor' and up to the second song, 'Cemeteries of London' liking this tune too! Yes is a very different song by Coldplay standards, but it's one I like! Strawberry Swing is probably my favourite off the first listen, it's one of the most upbeat Coldplay songs I've ever heard! I think this is going to be my favourite album so far.

I agree with all the comments, the album is a definite step forward in maturity and artistic development; I have to say the tracks I was most drawn to have to be either lost, or cemeteries of London...They definitely have more going for them than Violet Hill - Not that it's a bad track. I'm really quite impressed with how Chris' vocal strength has developed on this album.
