I have analogue/satellite aerial feeds into a Sky + box. The aerials are distributed to each room in the house via a splitter box in the loft. TVs in each room can receive sky programmes and tv channels can be changed in each room via a sky control unit and a “mouse” that plugs into the aerial.

I wish to move to HD and envisage that the system will comprise an HD tv; Blu-Ray player; sky HD box and video player. When the HD equipment is installed will it still be possible to receive the HD signal via the existing splitter and mouse devices or will I need to move to a different distribution system?

I am also advised that to ensure a high quality HD picture I should link all the equipment via special cables – gold tipped connectors I believe- is this true and if it is does it mean that all the coaxial cable currently distributed throughout the house will need to be changed also.

Your advice/clarification would be most welcome.

As I understand it, you can keep your present cable arrangement, but you will not be transmitting a HD signal unless you connect via HDMI cables or Component RGB.

As far as getting a better HD signal via gold plated connectors, this is nonsense unless you are using very long cables.

A £2-50 HDMI cable or the one you get with the HD box is good enough.

Many thanks for the response. Given the advice may I raise a supplementary question.

What do I need, cable wise, to receive HD pictures on, say three HD tvs, two of which are in different rooms from the main TV and Sky HD box? The distance from each tv being, say, 40 feet.

you need a HDMI repeater and hdmi cables from that to each room

keep the RF in place so magic eye can work in each room ( to change channels in other room)
