reroute my landline
microbar
10-06-2008
I am disabled and use my broadband internet to keep in touch with my relations and entertainment bbc i player etc.
My land line which was in place in my property in 1986
has gradually degraded and the speed i used to attain
is now down from approx 4 meg adsl max to at present
1.5 meg D/L
This is despite the fact I am only 860 metres sam knows
from my bt exchange, The line obviously takes a detour,
And have been informed by my isp that the actual distance from the exchange is 2km
My question is it possible for BT to re-route my phone line
to a more acceptable length
I am willing to pay for this.
Or should I cease the line and ask for a new line
I have tried to ask bt wholesale about this but they wont talk to mear mortals

I have problems streaming bbc i player now my speed is that poor thankyou for your help.

the chances are there is no shorter route for the line to go, and the cost of putting in a new "direct" feed would be astronomical.
however, seeing as you were having great speed before it is obvious that the quality of the copper pair has started to degrade.
i'm guessing you don't have a modern day NTE5 master socket (has a line across the middle with 2 small screws below it).
are you experiancing any noise or crackle on the line when in use? dial 17070 opt 2.

Thanks for your reply openreachpeep
Yes I do have the new style nte5 box
But before this is a very old piece of cable
Running from an old style junction box with the bt piper logo
on it,
I have a friend who lives not far from me and his isp arranged for his line to be moved to a different bt cabinet
And his speed has improved drastically,

So much for bt maintaining there adsl lines.
I did sign the naked adsl line petition
The Reply we recieved today from downing street is below.

Thank you for the e-petition about British Telecom (BT) active telephone line use for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) internet.

It is now possible to make telephone calls over a broadband connection, which means consumers no longer need to pay the call charges associated with the traditional telephone service. However, the consumer still needs a telephone line in order to access the broadband service. Such an arrangement is referred to as Naked ADSL, and the belief that consumers no longer using the traditional phone should not be required to pay line rental for broadband is wrong.

As a private organisation, BT makes a service charge for line rental that is used to cover the cost to the company of installing and maintaining its ADSL network. BT's charges for line rental have in the past been substantially below the cost of providing the basic infrastructure needed before any call can be made or connected to the internet. When broadband was introduced as an incremental service, consumers who were buying a phone service could also purchase broadband. Because the cost of installing and maintaining the telephone line was already being recovered by the charges for the phone service (within the line rental charge), broadband was able to get a 'free ride'.

It looks like my only cause of action now is to cease my land line, If BT are not prepared to do anything about it.
I was looking at the posibility of using a mobile internet connection.
Thanks again for your reply.

we are tasked to improve the network when we visit on an LLU SFI visit(this is raised to us by your isp), this would involve replacing any old cabling not up to our quality standards and trying to get the best signal quality possible for your line. such as trying a shorter e-side (the link from the cabinet to the exchange) i have known no instances where people have been moved to another cabinet to improve quality as the network was never designed that way, the only exception being if the other cabinet was a fibre cab, but these are few and far between. if you used to have good speeds in the past then your isp should have a record of this and as i've said the chances are there is a fault developing on your line. BT's responsibility as your voice provider is to provide a service suitable for voice only. sadly this can vary from the copper quality req'd to provide a decent b/band service. hence why you have to go through your isp to provide a better b/band service.

I was with bulldog for my phone and BB, where I was getting a stable 15mb connection.

I moved my phone back to bt and I then ordered sky BB now I can only get 8mb stable connection.

I cant get sky to understand what I was getting before, BT say they wont help as the line is fine for voice..

So It looks line I hve been but on a different route to what I have before so would moving my phone service to sky reroute my line to shorter path?

the only time (and it's rare) when a line is moved onto a different path. is either if a fault has occured and the only way to fix it was to do a pair change. or the line has been out of use for a considerable time and part of it's route was to provide service to another EU. then the original service was restored but on a different path.
in both instances the only major thing that would change in the route is which cable it is in from the exchange to the cabinet(green box). these vary and can affect the b/band speed achieved.
seeing as all you did was switch provider, the copper pair would have stayed the same.
are you on sky's max service? is the exchange LLU? ( www.samknows.com your looking for sky/easynet) if not then your on sky's connect service which use's BT wholesales equip. which is only pushing out 8Mb tops at mo.
if you are on sky's LLU (and supposed to be getting 16Mb, then the best thing to do is email the helpdesk on there website, quoting a b/band technical issue. saying you want your line changing to adsl2.
i did this when i started sky. they only provided me with 8Mb (call to helpdesk later and was told that's all my line could do, due to length (it's only 882M!))couldn't be assed trying to convince them otherwise, so emailed. 3 days later line working at 16Mb.
i'm guessing they provide most people at 8Mb, so they can free up some bandwidth and use the old line length excuse, but thats only guessing.

I did speak to one of there engineers who put me onto the adsl2+ llu line but max out at

9788 kbps 639 kbps
Line Attenuation 18.0 db 8.1 db
Noise Margin 9.5 db 21.0 db

they guy was telling me that this is all my line can handle without errors.

i was not getting anywhere with him trying to explain that I was getting pretty close to 16mb with bulldog and the only thing that has changed is phone provider.

now i am being sent a new router to test, yet i did connect my old one and still the same.

According to samknows i am only 217meters from the exchange (as the crows fly) and bt at saying that cable wise i am 5.5km thats one hell of a detour

any ideas of where i can go from here

basically you will have to push on at them till, A they increase the line speed and apply interleaving to control the errors, or B req's a LLU SFI off them to ensure that there is nothing wrong with the copper pair which is causing the errors at high speed.
whilst on a job we can co-op with sky's teir 3 to alter the line rate, sometimes helps in locating a fault.
