It's clear as the series go on that he clearly wants mediocre as mediocre will fit in just right in his company. Nice guy, Lee, but a novice he clearly is. A more well-rounded (or brighter) candidate, such as Claire, would get bored working for such a company and would no doubt be hard to manage. Lee can be moulded, Claire cannot, simple as that.

I have to say it's made me feel less nervous about the many lies on my own CV.

Exactly, next year I'm going to apply The Apprentice next year claiming I've got a BA from Oxford, an MA form Cambridge and a PhD from Harvard.
It may not help you with the tasks. |

Then I can get a job for 100k So fiddle your CV if you like. It won't get you a 100k job same as it didn't for LEE. The Apprentice isn't picked from just the CV's, have you not been watching all these weeks. The only times CV's get mentioned is if sir alan wants to take the piss out of someone to call them up on being Jewish or any of the other lies that all of them had on their CV's. |

It's common knowledge that every CV is full of lies.
There's a clear distinction between lying and talking up the truth, with the latter helping to get you noticed which is the whole point of a CV. |

There is a great deal of difference in promoting your strengths on a CV than actually lying
Anyone could say they had a qualification by just being on a course without actually doing the work just as Lee did. It is a smack in the teeth to all those who completed the course by sheer hard work. Since when does cheating and lying ever be a recommendation to someones abilities. Only on the Apprentice, it seems. |

The most anyone bad has to say about him is one of the dates on his CV was wrong. Luckily Sir Alan can see past that and see the bigger picture. |

He actually didn't own up when he was asked about it; he tried to lie about it until the interviewer produced the evidence that he was lying.
