Well I was looking in an airport, so maybe that's why I couldn't find it! I'll have a lookie in town tomorrow

Glad it's in this week's edition as I didn't manage to get to the only WHSmith near me that actually sells it in time to get last week's. Must remember to get there before Thurs!

I looked in another quite big WHSmiths but no joy. Found some other very bizarre papers whilst looking for it though!

All the Nancys in the films have been different, but most have been good in their own way.”

You might be able to teach an actress to be good but i don't think you can teach someone to become a role. One follows detailed directions the other just is. One acts when they are acting in the script, the other continues as the character whilst everyone else is acting. Thats before you get to the problem of whether of how near to the role the person is and whether it becomes a variant of them or they become something else. There's playing dark and there's pretending to play dark - watch Helena Bonham Carter in Sweeney Todd play dark, vulnerable and troubled for the real thing.

I've just been to see Betwixt with Abi playing a disembodied love-lorn Austrian head - thats acting.

No I guess you can't. I think that in order to be a west end star that you need to be able to become any character that you are cast as. I think that being a great actor must have something to do with having a colourfull personality in order to bring life what the character is.
It's about believing that they are the person they are playing when they are on stage. That may sound deranged but just immitating feelings is not enough in order to be a real star is it.

Do you mean Abi from HDYSAPLM.

Yes. She is on in Betwixt at the Kingshead theatre Islington for abother week. She starts as a New York girlfriend and then reappears as a germanic speaking head............

On the main point I would imagine you can be more yourself as Maria if you start as close as Connie. Thats why Connie's ITV role should be interesting as it was reported as being very different - presumably why she's doing it. Nancy looks a more complicated role too. Some of the Maria's have already created very different characters . Helena has done Gypsy, The Wizard of Oz and south Pacific which has a pretty wide range of quirky and dramatic characters all done in US accents. . Abi and Aoife have both done US roles, Aoife has done the contrast between Chicago and SOM and Abi has been a suffering medieval girlfriend, a quirky New York Fame Academy student and now an Austrian head in search of a body - she seems to be able to do comedy and drama and multiple accents and always catches the eye moving her role along when someone else is actually speaking. I should really go and see Leanne in Les Mis too .........she seems to be breaking through the high drama barrier too.
Totally Vocal 2

Hey Network Babe, I have to say I agreed with everything you've said about acting with the exception of one thing.......... I thought Helena Bonham Carter was appalling in Sweeney Todd. Completely ruined the character for me. Missed so many nuances of Mrs LovettKs character and really spoiled the film (which I thought was edited to miss important parts of the story anyway).

Sorry. I did agree with what else you said though.
