i have a problem with my telephone line in my house - there seems to be a "static" sort of noise or interference on my line.
i have done all the usual checks and know the line coming into the house is OK, as i have plugged a phone into the master socket and the line is clear.

the problem exists off my extensions and is also causing havoc with my broadband connection, the connection keeps dropping.

i have checked that all 3 extensions are wired up correctly, also tried removing all phones and using one phone only checked all the extensions and still the line has this noise on it.

can anyone help me identifying/recitfying this problem? as it is really causing problems, especially with broadband service.

The most likely source of this sort of problem is interference between the broadband signal and one or more phones.

You don't say where in the system the broadband modem is connected and how many filters are in use. If there isn't a filter built in to the master socket you will need one on every outlet in use.

the broadband modem is connected to one of my hardwired extensions. and i have 2 phones in use elsewhere in the house, also connected to hardwired extensions.

all devices are using a broadband filter. i have done some more testing over the weekend and i think i have got to the bottom of the problem.

i have tried placing a filter in between the "test" socket on the BT master and then connected the BT master faceplate to the filter, all noise is gone. i have ordered one of these new adsl filtered master face plates that i have read about on this forum so will let you know how i get on when that arrives, i'm now quite confident that this is my problem.

That's what I've been using for a few years now and it works very well.

It does mean that the broadband modem will have to be connected at the master socket, because all the extensions wired from the new filtered faceplate will only carry the voice signal.

Some filtered face plates give you two extension wiring options. Filtered and unfiltered. If all the extensions are wired back individually to the master socket then you could wire the modem socket to the unfiltered terminals and everything else to the filtered.

Is one such. You would need a filter at the modem socket if you want to use a phone there obviously.

Though if the extensions are daisy chained off the master socket that option is not available anyway. In that case, as you say, the modem will have to be located at the master socket.

i was wondering about this, i have bought the faceplate that allows filtered and unfiltered connections.

from what i am reading i assume that the filtered connections only allows voice, right?
my master socket is based under the stairs and there is no power source for the modem to be placed there, as i understand it, i will have to use an unfiltered connection and use a filter for the extension my modem is connected to.

or can i get away with using a filtered extension at the modem as well? (it is not necessary for a handset at the extension the modem is connected to).

ADSL filters are essentially low-pass filters, in other words they let the low frequencies (the voice bit of the spectrum) through and not the high frequencies (the broadband signal)

An ADSL filter removes the high frequency broadband signals from the phone socket part of the filter. The RJ11 socket that the modem plugs into is connected directly to the phone line.

Therefore to connect an ADSL modem to a phone line all you actually need is an RJ11 socket to BT plug adapter. You don't need any filter at all. You only need a filter when you use a phone, FAX, Sky box or any other device connected to the same line.

You can simulate the effect of using a filtered extension quite easily if you have two plug in filters. Plug one filter into the other and plug your modem into the second. You won't be able to get a connection. Plug it into the first filter and you will get a signal.

In this test the second filter simulates a filtered extension. The first simulates an unfiltered extension. So you must always connect an ADSL modem to an unfiltered extension.

i got my new faceplate yesterday and immediately installed it. All my problems were cured, brilliant i thought.
i then went to work in the evening (night shift) and have just got back in to find the noise has returned, aaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

i plugged a phone in to the master socket and the noise was there, the test socket is fine.
please help????? i just don't know what i can do now..

That sounds exactly like the problem I was suffering from the last few weeks, I had a nightmare trying to connect to broadband and eventually nailed it down to crackling on the telephone line itself. After double checking it wasn't any of my equipment I reported a fault with BT and the next day it was sorted the BT Engineer said the connection outside was faulty and he had fixed it. Thank gawd it wasn't anything of mine as I didn't fancy having to fork out £160+

is the noise present when you have your b/band attached to our test socket aswell as the phone using a regular filter? dial 17070 opt 2 for a quiet line test.

i have tried a quiet line test with the phone plugged into the test socket, there is no problem.
can't really try the modem there yet as i don't have a power outlet near the master socket, i'll test it later with an extension cable though.


the irritating thing is that this has been going on for a couple of years now, in the past BT fixed it saying, there was a birds nest on the telegraph pole which was causing problems. this problem occurs around about this time every year.

this year is different because there is no noise on the test socket leading me to believe it is an internal problem.

if their is noise present when you do manage to attach the modem, then the fault is outside somewhere, only problem is your voice provider won't fix it you have to push on at your isp to arrange a LLU SFI visit, this will mean you get the correctly trained engineer to come and visit and find the fault. though if you have no noise with the b/band active then you are right there is a problem on your internal somewhere.
