Does a powered subwoofer have to be connected with a dedicated subwoofer cable? My local shop told me that I could use a cable meant to send vision, as this was the only 10 metre cable they had in stock. It cost £15. Is this true?

Any quality screened cable with an RCA phono socket at each end will do the job.

You should be OK with one half of a stereo audio cable like the kind with the red and white plugs - it's unlikely you'll hear much difference by spending a lot of money.

However if you want to spend dosh, Comet will relieve you of your hard earned with a Monster MB100 sub woofer cable.

At this point, the hifi enthusiasts will tell me I have cloth ears and should be taking out a mortgage to buy cables at £10,000 an inch and speaker stands the price of a small car...

Each to their own I suppose!

Yes, I saw the monster cable at Comet, but £40 for a 4mt cable was way too much. Thanks for the advice though.

Usual gets what you pays for. Think I splashed out a huge 20 quid (to hook up a many hundred quid's worth of rel sub) for 10m of nice gold-plated ixos job, which is actually ok when you consider what a short pair of stereo cables will cost you. Probably worth getting a bit better than an out-of-the-box cheapie, but don't go too mad...

£15 seems a fair price for a 10 metre cable. As stated earlier, no need to go mad for a sub cable. Something with metal plugs and decent screening will do just fine.

On the subject of Comet and Monster cables, today I wanted to buy a 1.5 metre optical "cable" (toslink to toslink) for my DVD recorder. Comet wanted £44.95! Seems like they have doubled their prices in the last 12 months. I am sure when I bought one of these last year it was about £20 (same cable, same store).

Needless to say, I didn't buy from Comet this time. Paid £19.95 from my local independant electrical store.

Cheers
