Let's Talk R.E.M.
Who here likes R.E.M.?
Just listening to their new album 'Accelerate' and have to say its definatly a retern to form. How amazing is 'Man-Sized Wreath', 'Mr. Richards' and 'Accelerate'. Also had their Greatest Hits on in the car the other day. So many good songs. I love 'Man On The Moon', 'All The Way To Reno', 'The Great Beyond', 'At My Most Beautiful' and 'The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight'.. Also love 'The Outsiders' from thier 'Around The Sun' album. What do you guys like? |

These were my views on the album, posted in another thread:
I think the album starts very well, in fact I'd say Living Well Is The Best Revenge, Man Sized Wreath, Supernatural Superstitious and Hollow Man are their best opening quartet of songs since Life's Rich Pageant's Begin The Begin, These Days, Fall On Me and Cuyahoga, although not quite of the same high calibre. After that, well, I think it trails off a bit......Houston is very run of the mill, the title track I'm sure sounds great live but on record is merely only above average. Until The Day Is Done is very reminiscent of Swan Swan H , a bit REM by numbers that one, and Mr Richards sounds too pleasant a tune and melody for the subject matter. The album then recovers with Sing For The Submarine, another swing beat number, quite powerful and a real grower. The penultimate song, Horse To Water, again I suspect would sound better live, whilst the last, I'm Gonna DJ, would probably have been best left as a B-side. So on the whole, about a 6 or a 7/10 for me. Thankfully, it doesn't drag on like Around The World, and when it works, the stripped down approach is very good indeed. When it doesn't, it sounds like Monster Mk II. If on the whole that sounds a bit critical, that is because I've been a big REM fan for over 20 years and hate seeing bands that I love just plod on well past their sell by date. I don't think they'll ever recapture the zip of the IRS years due to their age obviously, and to me, that was their best period. AFTP might be seen as their classic album, but I suspect a lot of people who claim that haven't heard some of their earlier work. To me, their last great album was New Adventure In Hi-FI. |
