pap2 Ringing issue

Hi All,

I have recently connected a phone up to a pap2, which in turn is connected to my Draytek router. When it comes to making calls, it works perfectly, but for receiving calls, occasionally the phone doesnt ring. People trying to ring me have said it rings for ages, but I dont answer so they assume im not home, but infact my phone just didnt ring, so I didnt know I was being called.

The strange thing is, most of the time it does ring as it should, its just occasionally...I would guess 1 in 5 calls where it just doesnt ring. Could anyone tell me what could cause this and how I would go about fixing it? FYI, my VOIP provider is Sipgate.

Many Thanks!

I'm not at home at the moment, won't be back until late Wednesday / Early Thursday, so don't have access to my PAP2 and can't remember every setting without looking I'm afraid - however:

Is the RJ11 to BABT adapter you are using, one with a ring capacitor, as some phones usually ones made for UK use only and to save a few pennies don't include them in the phone themselves. Though if using a DECT you shouldn't have this problem, other than the base station on some might not ring - but the handset would as it generates its own ringing.

The other to look at is to go into the PAP2 settings, advanced, admin.

Increase the ring voltage to 70, 75 or 80v.
Try: trapezoid instead on sinusoid.
Caller ID method: ETSI FSK with PR(UK)

Under SIP, use a STUN server any would do.

Might not be back online for a while, so if I don't reply, don't worry, I will be back - at some point.

Hi FirstCut, Thanks for the reply. I already had trapezoid set, but I will try the other options you suggested and see if they make a difference. Might take me a couple days to test it though, since like I said the problem only occurs occasionally.

Have you forwarded the SIP port (under Line 1/2, SIP settings on the PAP2) at the router to the PAP2? The PAP2 can send "NAT keep alive" packets every so often but it is more reliable to have the router forward packets to the PAP2. If the keep alive interval is too short then the router would have closed the port too early, hence the SIP message telling the phone to ring is blocked at the router (and hence the phone appears to intermittently not ring).
Just configure your router to forward the SIP port (both UDP and TCP protocols) to the PAP2 (and you can turn off the "NAT keep alive" option).
