The Stolen Earth SFX preview

http://www.sfx.co.uk/page/sfx?entry=..._of_doctor_who

It doesn't have any spoilers, but it does have:

"Episode 12 is ABSOLUTELY BLEEDIN' MENTAL and SUPER-DOOPER-FANWANKY. They'll have to power-hose the squee off the walls of the Outpost Gallifrey forums a week on Saturday."

"Ming-Mong-kryptonite", "don't-give-a-toss audacity of it", and "there's a slim chance I'll think it's a big pile of tits once I've calmed down" - so typical RTD then?

oh I missed you when you were away...

I'm actually more optimistic about the finale as it draws closer from things I'm hearing about it, having been quite lukewarm about it all initially.

we can only judge that when the episode has aired. the preview does concern me though when describing it as fanw*nk. I hope it isn't to the detriment of a storyline.

perhaps that's what this series reset is...

when AoG/Doomsday was described as fanw*nk by some who watched it people got very defensive but yet this finale is being pitched as such and people are already proclaiming it will be wonderful. I thought the term was supposed to be derogatory rather than a compliment?

I know, it has never been amusing, and is now just really boring and unimaginative.

The Stolen Earth sounds BRILLIANT though!

rather like the very unspoilerish title The Stolen Earth which to this day I still don't understand why it was kept so secret. we already knew planets were disappearing from the references earlier on in the series.

unlike some will wait to see the actual episode before proclaiming it brilliant.

Without taking away anything from the potential quality of the episode, it is worth remembering the SFX lot are hardly known for their objectivity.

That's certainly not true, as a look at their reviews for previous episodes easily shows.

I do read them. I've been reading SFX since issue #1.

SFX have a bad reputation for a lack of profesional objectivity and a tendency to hype up shows/movies they have good relations with. At its peak (the Joss Whedon/Buffy days) it was unbearable. So much so that loads of people complained so they did tone it down, but it's still there. It's not unusual for SFX to hype up an episode/movie one day but then in order to give the illusion of objectivity to slag of the very same episode/movie several months later, once the need for hype is redundant.

Yes, but without SFX we wouldn't have the THE Colin Baker Cult - surely that's enough to forgive everything, to have THE Colin in our lives...

SFX used to slag off Who all the time until 2005 time when it returned to our screens.

They are carpet baggers.

A bad reputation with who? It's the best selling sci-fi mag in the country and wins awards.

When you say it has a bad reputation are you talking about what you and your mates think, perchance?

You mean that they used to give good reviews to a ground-breaking and extremely popular programme that garnered positive reviews from every other source too? Obviously signs of sycophantic bias rather than the programme deserving good reviews.

Really? I can't think of one instance of this happening.

Or are you maybe talking about the way that different people will review different things and give them different ratings? You know, the way that happens when there are objective reviews.

All hail THE Colin Baker.

With many people who feel the same way of course, or are you perhaps saying I am alone in this opinion? Over the years SFX readers themselves have written in to the mag to express such opinions and many of these letters have been printed.

As I said earlier, it has been toned down and it's nowhere near as bad as it was years ago.

I never questioned it's mass popularity, but rather it's professional objectivity. Now you'd think the two would go and in hand, wouldnt ya? Strange.

Quote:

No at all. This reputation came from a lot of pis*ed off long time readers of the mag.

There's a big difference between praising an excellent programme such as Buffy and kissing the show makers ass at every opportunity in a desperate attempt to become part the show's in-crowd.
