Tomato - Heinz
Brown - HP

Always out of a glass slappable bottle - never plastic.

I've gone through phases.

As a kid, it was always Heinz tomato ketchup.

As a teen it was HP Brown Sauce.

Now I'm in my 20s, it's BBQ Sauce. I much prefer it - especially in burgers, or on chips, and especially when having pizza. I can't believe I used to put tomato ketchup on pizza. Makes me feel quite sick now!

Ever since Heinz closed the HP sauce factory in Brum, I have stopped buying Heinz products. Branston sauces, beans and spaghetti are all excellent. I have found some excellent replacements for Heinz soups too.

Stand up and be counted for British jobs!

Well I boycotted Heinz too after they pulled that completely inoffensive Deli-Mayo TV ad following a handful of homophobic complaints.
(the 'gay kiss' ad that wasn't really a gay kiss at all).

Am actually very pleased they no longer have my custom as I've discovered Sainsbury's own brand ketchup is just as good - and way cheaper.
I still need to work on a replacement for HP Sauce though.
Think I might try Branston after reading the comments on here...

i used to use daddies tom ketchup until they stopped doing it in glass bottles, sauce out of plastic bottles just doesn't taste right and i cant help wondering about chemicals leaching out of the plastic yuk.
well after much searching, lidls tom ketchup came out on top, and much cheaper.
i notice daddies is now in bottles again but too late.

For brown sauce, it has to be OK.

For tomato ketchup, we now make our own. It is fantastic and you know where the ingredients came from.

OK sauce? I've not seen that for a long time. Used to have that as a kid.

C'mon, spill the ketchup recipe, P_F!

I almost missed the request from the 2/3rds devil (eco66), so here goes.

Tomatoe Ketchup

Ingredients
6kg/13lb ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped
8 medium onions, peeled, halved and sliced
2 large red peppers, seeds and white filament removed, chopped
150g/5oz soft brown sugar
500ml/17fl oz cider vinegar
1 tsp mustard
½ tsp large piece of cinnamon stick
1 tbsp whole allspice
1 tbsp whole cloves
1 tbsp ground mace
1 tbsp celery seeds
1 tbsp black peppercorns
2 bay leaves
1 garlic clove, peeled and bruised
salt
paprika, to taste (optional)

Method
1. Combine the tomatoes, onion and peppers in a large heavy pan over a medium heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until very soft. Push through a coarse-mesh sieve and return to the pot with the sugar, vinegar and mustard. Tie the cinnamon, allspice, cloves, mace, celery seeds, black peppercorns, bay leaves and garlic in a square of muslin and drop it into the stew. Bring the mixture to the boil, then reduce to a slow simmer. Continue to cook, allowing it to bubble gently, stirring often and carefully, for at least 10-20 minutes, until thoroughly blended and quite thick.
2. Leave to cool, remove the muslin bag of spices, then pour the mixture through a funnel into suitable bottles. Stored in the fridge this ketchup will keep for a month. If you follow the prescribed procedure for preserves and bottle in properly sterilised jars, it should keep for a year.

Hammonds Chop Sauce is a great alternative to HP.
Only Morrisons of the major supermarkets stock it though.

I was brought up with Heinz and HP and just can't adjust my palate to any other brand - they're the ones that taste right!!

If I'm having chips then it has to be Heinz Light Salad Cream - or sometimes a wee splash of Lea & Perrins Worcestershire. Quite partial to a bit of HP Fruity and Reggae Reggae too.
