Something I realised....

In the mid series trailer, I saw the Stars Are Going Out Phrase. I didn't know what he meant, but when I came to think hard about it I realised what it could be.

Spoiler
What if something was coming towards Earth, and as it got bigger it was blocking out our view of the stars?

It makes sense.

And for you new ppl to read the spoiler boxes highlight them

The stars were shown 'going out' and they were in random places all over the sky, so you're more likely talking about somethings if you're right.

I think over people have said this but i'll say it again, what i'd love to happen is, you know the whole 'the darkness is coming' thing? i'd love for the stars to go out and the world is plunged into darkness so its like nightime all the time, but we never know this could happen seeing as this looks like quite a dark ep.

All this talk of stars going out, and the Doctor's name has reminded me of an Arthur C Clarke story 'The Nine Billion names of God', where the universe will end if the monks find the name of God. In the end, when they find a way, the story ends with the ominous phrase "overhead, without any fuss, the stars were going out."

Maybe RTD has something like this in mind, although, bearing in mind what happened to Raj Persaud this week, he'll have to be careful!!

Yh maybe...... Maybe its something like a Dalek fleet or something.

I have many theories for that...
1. Something is stealing hydrogen from all the stars and that's why they're going out, because the hydrogen is being 'hijacked'
OR
2. A big fleet of ships, like the Daleks are coming and have adopted Stargate Atlantis's method of cloaking the ships
3. The Daleks are coming and their presence is blocking the stars like an eclipse
4. Maybe something is trying to terraform the universe...
5. The 'big thing', which is probably the return of the Daleks, are burning out the stars so they can attack in the dark??

Well, The Doctor had to burn up a star just to communicate with Rose when got stranded in the parallel universe - perhaps whomever is behind this parallel universe destruction thingy has to burn up more suns to be able to forge a connection with them. Farfected, I guess.

yeah maybe

I certainly think it's more than just things blocking out the stars. I believe they really are going out. I predict a climax of apocolyptic proportions and if it lives up to its promise some excellent science fantasy possibly as good as the late Arthur C Clarke might have written. Or maybe that's just to totally wishful thinking.

But with this build up it's got to be something pretty terrific or the programme makers will never be forgiven...

Not a bad idea at all though - it's sci fi, it's supposed to be far fetched

Or maybe they're not all stars, the sky did look a bit chockablock with them. Maybe they were the lights of millions of spaceships lying in wait ready to attack.

Nothing physical can block the light from the stars as light travels. If a starlight was blocked we wouldn't know about it for hundreds or thousands of years.

That would be the same if they went out, though.

Not wanting to be pedantic but that was my first thought too!

Not quite right rudeboy. It depends at what distance the stars light was blocked. the closest star to earth is proxima centauri 4.6 light years away. If blocked at it's source we on earth would find out in 4.6 years, as light travels 1 light year in a year (this is where the measurement comes from).

If the starlight was blocked at a distance the same as the very edge of our solar system we woulf find out in a year or so, at the same distance as the sun we would find out in eight minutes, at the same distance as the moon in a matter of seconds.

If the stars are getting destroyed we would have to wait a lot longer than we would if they were getting blocked.

But then when has science ever got in rtd's way when he's writing a story.

Hi, New to forum here!
Just a thought, when the Dr went to the end of the universe in Utopia, weren't all the stars gone then. Wasn't it just darkness?
