There hasn't been a movie version of the Les Miserables musical, as yet. There have been (I think) a couple of movie versions which are straight adaptations from the novel.

The 10th anniversary concert is available on video (and possibly DVD). Try Amazon or Play.Com, or you could try ebay.

Having just watched the clip (should have done that first, really), it appears to be from one of the non-musical films with a song from the musical spliced on as the 'soundtrack'. As advised above re: the 10th Anniversary concert, try one of the online retailers or ebay.

That clip is from a film version starring Liam Neeson as John Val John and Geoffery Rush as Javer (both characters names are both probably incorrectly spelt so i appologise in advance) - it is a straight non-musical version of the novel so the music has merely been dubbed in over the film footage. However i happened to stumble across it on sky one day and thought it was absolutely brilliant! Both Neeson and Rush were incredible in it so id definitely recommend getting it out....

I loved this film (been a while since I've seen it now) and it inspired me to read the book and to see the musical (going this year)!

I think this film has some MAJOR characterisation problems. It's isn't very true to the book. The ending was so unbelievably messed up I actually started shouting at the screen. And at one point, doesn't Valjean slap Cosette around the face?

I prefer the one with Gerard Depardieu as Jean Valjean (I can't remember who plays Eponine, but she is in it) - it seems closer to the book. It's in 2 parts, quite long. I bought the DVD from Amazon.

lol, I once asked the same question on a les mis forum and they completely slaughtered the movie, so I've been put off from watching it. If you do watch it, let me know if it's any good!

No, all the characters are French. I think the Thénadiers always put on a Cockney-esque accent because it just seems like what they'd have if they were speaking in English. As for why the whole musical is in an English accent - well, they never try to sing TSOM in an Austrian accent!

they do when it's one in Austria! lol

i know what you mean, but i have english and even scottish people sing and it sounds. even when Shakirah sings in English, she sounds English and not spanish.

as for the acting, no you can't help the accent at all.

my question was answered about the characters all being French.

If you love the musical you might consider Les Miserables -Stage By Stage. This is a documentry about the show but there are plenty of performances from the show included. I have a copy on video and it's very good. If you're a fan it's worth seeing.
