Although ratings are still constant but slowly dropping, and the soap being becoming a laughing stock is it time itv put it out of its misery?

Can you explain why it is a laughing stock?

I thought the coffin/garbage crusher storyline was hilarious.

All the soaps are constantly but slowly dropping, it is to do with changing viewing habits.

That's interesting. Do you know why viewing habits are changing?

I doubt it. I think the main downfall of Brookie was that when it hit the low patch it was shunted around in the schedules so much people gave up on trying to find it. I doubt ITV would do that...which will keep the loyal viewers and will pick up more when storylines and such improve.

But Corrie and EE haven't dropped as much as Emmerdale has from last year. Corrie's are down but by a miniscule amount and both soaps averages are still good. In fact EE's ratings are UP on last year....

its a laughing stock compared to soaps such as EastEnders and hollyoaks has they are on peak form and winning loads of awards for their storypines, Emmerdale now is merely an old grannies soap that should be put to rest, all they do is the silly explosion for storylines were other soaps have anorexia storylines and what makes it even more unbearable is that they try to steal viewers from EE on a tuesday evening, but its so funny as they believe they can the number 1 uk soap lol. thats why it is a LAUGHING STOCK !

Youve still only provided your opinion there rather than any real substance.

Up on last year, but take it as over ten years or so and all viewing figures are lower due to more channels, more options to view programs in different ways etc. Emmerdale's figures are probably even lower because they did have a poor year last year, but it is still one of the most watched programs on tv so there is little chance of it being taken off.

I don't think it's in danger of being axed no and, I agree, ratings are a lot different to what they were 10 years ago. I think Emmerdale was always more consistent than the other two though. For years it was getting 9/10m viewers. Obviously it will have dropped by now as all shows have but the drop should be gradual. When a show haemorrhages 2m viewers in as many years then, like you say, there's probably a quality issue at play as well. It should give cause for concern for the show's bosses.

Don't worry about it; we all have our afflictions.

Mind you, there were only four TV channels back then!

Al they do is explosion storylines? The death of Daniel and it's aftermath was one of the best soap storylines ever IMO. Also, Andy & Jo's portrayal of an abusive marriage has been brilliant.

I never refrain from criticising Emmerdale and there's still a lot wrong with it, but credit should be given when it does hit form.

And when it does, it tops the other soaps for drama. Didn't EE recently have an explosion BTW?

Explosions in EE are sparse really and never OTT. They can't go OTT even if they wanted to as the houses are made of wood so it isn't practical.

Hollyoaks, on peak form, which is still getting under half the viewers that Emmerdale gets, sometimes a third. It isn't Emmerdale that are trying to "steal" Eastenders viewers, the scheduling's down to the channel, not the producers of the individual programmes. "Other soaps do anorexia storylines" - Hollyoaks, you mean? Yeah, I watched that. Emmerdale just did a cot death storyline and did it beautifully. The Hollyoaks anorexia storyline was badly played out and appallingly researched and as the sister of a recovering anorexic I can say that quite safely. Emmerdale isn't aimed at "old grannies", the target audience perimeters are actually pretty broad. Hollyoaks is aimed at teenagers. If that's what floats your boat buddy, stick with it. But don't criticize other soaps for having a narrow target demographic when Hollyoaks is the only one guilty of that.

I don't think I've ever seen such a childish and badly thought out post in over a year of posting here actually. Well done mate, the accolade is yours.

Im not the biggest fan of eastenders but would i create threads saying it should be axed? No because its not gonna happen, so i dont feel the need to make myself look silly.

They still resort to explosions - fires - disasters on occasion.

Emmerdale do have too many though, I agree.

I haven't watched Eastenders in years, and the bits i catch or read in the TV mags don't make me want to watch it - but that's my personal opinion.

I also think Emmerdale has been on relatively fine form lately. The Arthur storyline, although a little far fetched has been beautifully written with lots of emotion. Some of the other storylines are indeed a bit weak, but then if you're comparing Pollard admitting he's broke with a heartbreaking baby storyline then it's not surprising!

I am sure the people who hate Emmerdale would love to see it going the same way as Brookside, but I doubt this will happen.

coronation Street and emmerdale are the two big soaps on ITV, so I cannot see ITV axing it, although if some people do not like it, do not watch it. Why should it be axed just because you do not like it? I like it and do not want it axed.

Also Emmerdale has been running since the late 70s/early 80s, so it is quite an achievement.

Does anybody know the current viewing figures?
-It's getting around 6 million viewers at the moment and in any one week can usually range from 5.5m-6.5m.

-Rates approximately as the 5th most watched show of the week.

-Eastenders and Corrie are getting around 7-9 million.

-The share of the audience is anything between 30% and 38%

-The main competition (The One Show) on BBC1 gets anything between 3.5m and 5m.

-Usually goes up by around 0.3m in officials.

Last week's overnight ratings:

MONDAY-6.5m-34%
TUESDAY-6.0m-30%
WEDNESDAY-6.0m-32%
THURSDAY-5.6m-32%
FRIDAY-5.9m-35%

It's also worth noting as ITV have been finishing Emmerdale earlier to accomodate the football starting dead on 7:30pm this has had an effect on the audience and brings it doen by about 0.3m.
