In your eyes, what is the greatest guitar solo ever?

I reckon it's Slash (Guns N' Roses) for November Rain. It's just so damn awesome!

Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock doing The Star Spangled Banner.Legendary stuff.

I don't know enough about rock music to know who played what, but Tuesday's Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd is sublime guitar work throughout.

Jon Poole, Cardiacs - 'Fiery Gun Hand'...comes in at about at 3.25

(perhaps not the best solo of all time, but well up there for exhilarating off-the-cuffness :))

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb. Gilmour is suberb on this, particularly the version on the live Pulse dvd.

Comfortably Numb's a good one. I love the solos in Dogs by Gilmour as well.

I'm not a massive fan but Smashing Pumpkins - Soma has probably my favourite guitar solo. Every note is spot on.

    Probably right...

"Free Bird" in with a chance

"Stairway" must be up there too - it may be a bit overdone, but it is a classic.

"All along the Watchtower" for me

I must be the only GNR fan who can't stand November Rain. :o
Sweet Child O Mine is their best solo, imo

While it's probably between All Along The Watchtower or Comfortably Numb for the best ever Iron Maiden deserve an honourable mention. They don't come much better than those in Hallowed Be Thy Name or Rime of the Ancient Mariner (the latter containing 3 of the best minutes you'll find in rock history :))

"Eruption" by Van Halen was quite unusual for its time...

I thought November Rain before I opened this thread up although I do think that Nuno Bettencourt's Flight of the wounded bumblebee is rather special.

I'm quite partial to the one in Don't Stop Believing by Journey myself.

Also love the one in Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd, and Sweet Child O Mine by Guns N Roses.

    So many greats already mentioned.
I also rate, Comfortably Numb, Money, Eruption, Hendrix @ Woodstock, Stairway and Freebird. And I'm another who much prefers Sweet Child to November Rain (Sweet Child intro is currently my ringtone)

Also, lately, really getting into Steve Vai's stuff

If you seriously want to hear guitar playing as an art then chekc out Eric Johnson's "Cliffs Of Dover".

November Rain isn't even Slash's best solo, never mind the best one ever. Just about anything else he's done is better in guitar solo terms.

Gilmour's 'Money', Blackmore's 'Child in Time'.

In context, probably Jimi Hendrix's 'Star Spangled Banner'.

I definitely agree with Sweet Child O' Mine

But also I love the guitar solo on The Carpenter's Goodbye To Love

    Makes my spine tingle.
