With 192 finally disappearing next Sunday, 24th August, does everyone still use their own networks services or has anyone found a better or cheaper service that we can all use. Gotta look after the pennies. I'm on the Orange network and they text the number to you but it seems a bit expensive for the call connection.

At bt.com you can get 200 free searches a month if you register.

I rarely used 192 and on the few occasions I did, I used a public phone box, as it was free of charge.

When I got my PAYG Vodafone they were doing Scoot directory inquiries (333), which was free of charge. Don't know if that's still going, as I've never used it.

Well, I'll miss it, I tryed 118 118, not that helpful at all, they just recommened i look in the yellow pages after 5 minutes looking. They say its cheap, buit compared to 192 not, they ADD connection fees like 25p per minue on top of the other stuff!
Not good, which is why im sticking to 118 500

I'm quite confused by all this, maybe someone could help me out.

The advert tells us to call 118-118. Phone boxes in the area are telling us to call 118-500. And, to add to my confusion, there is ANOTHER advert telling us to call 11-88-88!

Can someone tell me what I SHOULD be calling?

I know this is confusing and Oftel should have minded their own buzzness about it and left it alone, but here goes : -

118-118 is a telewest number for enquires, expensive for me
118-500 is the one that BT now has to replace 192
118 888 is the same but ran by a different company

No one will have 118 192 as it will be consdiered a monoplony!

118 118 is not telewest, IIRC it's run by some german company and is quite expensive. I've tried 118888 and they seem quite good and cheap enough as well if you phone from a house phone, don't know about mobiles though.

oh, but i thought...... well it does'nt matter, im still sticking with 118 500

yep, besides all these different ads all make the company look stupid, ie: - 118 118 with them 2 men!

Yep 118 88 88 seems a good deal but many of those others are a HUGE rip-off! If in doubt call BT/O2 DIrectory Enquiries on 118-500 and avoid the coyboys that will connect your call after you have been given the number ... not advising you that the 118 rate applies!

Whatever service you choose to use - jot down the number and dial it yourself - forget how nice and helpful the operator is - if you dont it could cost you up to 75p/min for your connection!

Bear in mind this is now a much bigger profit making opportunity - with call connection at 118 call rates (and they are not simple with connection charges and time charges thereafter)... many phone users will get a nasty shock in their phone bills thanks to sweet talking trained call centre folk......

118 878 is the number for NTL directory enquires. They only charge a flat rate of 40p a call, which is the cheapest I have found, and i know they are decent as it is the same as the old 192 service you got from an NTL phone.

This whole idea is stupid, they had a similar system in germany which started off with 26 private enquireys companies, they now hav just 2. I mean whats the point? YOu should just use whats provided by your Telco, and if that seems steap then change telcos. it comes as part of the package.

Do all these118 numbers, when called from mobiles send text messages containing the numbers. If so, can the opperator still read the number to you like normal?

I dont know about that. But I know with orange, they tell you the number, then about 20 seconds later you get it by text message AS WELL.

yes, thats true, I think BT Have started to do this, but im not sure. At least i know im sticking with BTS one. I trust them alot more!

Thats weird, I thought I was talking about orange Directory Enquireys. If you are on orange, then your only option was to call Orange Enqureys (until about a week or two ago) so how could you "stick" with BT. Unless you are talking about landlines or another cellular operator in which case there was no point in quoting my post

I'm talking about when i was on the old BT Cellent service, and landline.

One that isn't listed and hasn't been mentioned is the Vodafone service which is 118 881

i read in th paper that the cheapest is 118 800. its only 19p a minute , wich is a lot beta then most

Well, thats it, 192 is no longer, though you can still ring it and it will give you the freephone number to ring to find the numbers out for 118.

Some of them are really dear, especially 118 118.

The reason the 118 800 is considerably cheap is that it is routed to a call centre in Africa, which actually take the national Emergency calls for their country.

So the system was already set up anyway, well to an extent, read BBC News online review of them all.

For the moment at least the cheapest directory enquiries must surely be one.tel.

if you are a one.tel customer and use their directory enquiry service its absolutely free until December 31st....

only thing is you have to join them first.
