Best/worse covers
According to a poll in the Daily Mail http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...over-song.html Quote:
Take cover, Celine is singing AC/DC - the tune voted world's worst cover song
By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 12:02 AM on 23rd June 2008 Celine Dion' Musical offence: Celine Dion's cover version of the AC/DC track You Shook Me All Night Long has been voted the worst It hardly bears thinking about. Or, heaven forbid, singing along with. Celine Dion's version of AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long has been voted the world's worst cover song. Dion, 40, has never released the song as a single. Perhaps after performing the 'musical offence' at a Las Vegas concert six years ago, she didn't dare. Her interpretation of the Australian hard rock hit was enough to see her top the chart of shame published by magazine Total Guitar. A Sugababes and Girls Aloud version of Walk This Way - a huge hit for Aerosmith and rappers Run DMC - came second. Westlife's 1999 cover of the ballad More Than Words by rock duo Extreme limped in at third. Will Young's cover of The Doors' Light My Fire, which reached Number One in 2002, and an easy listening arrangement of Oasis's Wonderwall by The Mike Flowers Pops completes the top five. But it wasn't all sour notes. The magazine also published a list of what it says are the best cover versions. Jimi Hendrix's classic take on Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower topped the list, followed by The Beatles' rendition of Twist and Shout, first recorded by the Top Notes. The Guns 'N' Roses version of the Wings' song Live and Let Die, Nirvana's cover of The Man Who Sold the World by David Bowie, and Muse's Feeling Good, originally by Nina Simone, are also in the top five. Total Guitar editor Stephen Lawson said: 'Cover versions have never been bigger. 'It's good to see that Hendrix still is Number One. Celine Dion covering AC/DC is sacrilege.' Worst Cover Songs 1. Celine Dion, You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) 2. Girls Aloud/Sugababes, Walk This Way (Run DMC and Aerosmith) 3. Westlife, More Than Words (Extreme) 4. Will Young, Light My Fire (The Doors) 5. The Mike Flowers Pops, Wonderwall (Oasis) Best Cover Songs 1. Jimi Hendrix, All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan) 2. The Beatles, Twist And Shout (The Top Notes) 3. Guns N' Roses, Live And Let Die (Wings) 4. Nirvana, The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie) 5. Muse, Feeling Good (Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse) |

If you think Celine covering AC/DC is bad, I was subjected to a dance band's cover of Guns n' Roses' Sweet Child o' Mine the other day!

The best cover is Johnny Cash - Hurt. Without a doubt.
The worst well you can hear them every weekend when someone murders I Will Survive on the Karaoke.

I'm with David2008, Johnny Cash's version of Hurt is stunning, in fact there of covers are people voting might not realise are covers like the fantastic version of Tainted Love that Soft Cell did

Was it the Scissor Sisters who covered Comfortably Numb? I thought that was sacrilegious to be honest.

Sure we have a couple of threads already running about this but I'll say it again - My favourite covers are Heart's versions of Unchained Melody and Without you and the Manic Street Preachers' take on Chris Farlowe's Out of time.
I may get shot for this, but Leona Lewis has done a blinding job of First time ever I saw your face - I'm not a big fan of hers but that one is good. Atrocities are too numerous to mention. All Saints' Under the bridge makes me want to cut my ears off. |

Well I am a big Will Young fan but he shouldn't have recorded Light My Fire, a couple of years ago some dance band dared to do a verision of Patti Smith's Because The Night, that's a song that should never have been covered by anyone especially some crap dance band

I'm surprised The Pet Shop Boys version of Always On My Mind wasn't on the best list as some people consider that better than the Elvis Presley original.

Since the original was mentioned in the Bruce Springsteen thread... the version of Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann's Earth Band is horrible and for no apparent reason changes the lyrics so they don't make sense.

I wish Will had released Ain't No Sunshine instead of LMF. Anyway he covered Jose Feliciano's version of it, not The Doors.

I'd agree mainly with the list. Hendrix is a clear winner as the best cover.
Youngs Light My Fire is atrocious, but equally bad is the Scissor Sisters Comfortably Numb. |

![]() The Johnny Cash one hits you like a hammer in the face, but I've never heard the original.......... I liked Oasis' version of I Am The Walrus.........but it wasn't anything other than a fairly straight copy....... I guess with 'covers' you're really looking for a new interpretation otherwise Westlife and Boyzone would be top of the cover charts........... |

As others have said,
Johnny Cash - Hurt and Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah are the best cover versions ever. |

And what about all that screechy dance music which normally features some hideous over-synched voice singing the lyrics to a half decent 80's song to an awful repetitive beat.
Futureheads - Hounds of Love is a very good cover - I have to hand it to them they took a difficult song and did a good job. I will go with Hurt by Cash, very moving song... first time I heard it I had tears in my eyes |

Johnny Cash - Hurt and Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah are the best cover versions ever. I'd also add Song To the Siren by This Mortal Coil. And possibly Radiohead's version of Nobody Does It Better. Oh, and maybe the Sisters of Mercy's version of Emma by Hot Chocolate (and they did a mean version of Gimme Shelter as well.) Oh, and remember 80s pop star Paul Young? Did a great version of Tom Waits' A Soldier's Things. And David Bowie doing Wild Is the Wind, also fantastic. As for the worst, yes the Scissor Sisters' version of Comfortably Numb is a travesty because it sounds like they're taking the piss. Also Bush did a cover of Joy Division's In a Lonely Place which was just dreadful. And All Saints' version of Under the Bridge was laughably bad. |

Will Young's version of Light My Fire was a cover of Jose Feliciano's version.
