Im looking to get my first widescreen tv, but I need some recomendations of what to get.

It has to be 32 and allow connection of Sky digital, a dvd player and VCR.

Also I would apreciate suggestion at the mid to lower price range.

Any advice is most appreciated.

i bought a hitachi 32 inch a couple of months ago. I would suggest you do a seach on the internet and then get john lewis to match it. Thats what we did and got over tv for £1092 instead of £1400. I can't remember the model i bought but its got DTS and dobly digital and optical and coxial inputs for a dvd player.

Make sure it's a 100Hz model. They are worth paying that 'bit' extra.

Also consider a IDTV (DVB) with intergtared Digital tuner.

be very careful about buying a 100hz tv.If you intend to watch digital source material (dvd, sky etc) it can introduce digital artefacts into the picture.believe me it can ruin your life!best to audition several tv's in both 50 and 100hz.50 hz is not second best.also a idtv is not such a good idea yet as it limits your ability to adapt or upgrade in the future with out changing the tv as well.
Get a copy of home cinema choice and study the listings in the back pages.it grade the top 5/10 tvs ,amps, etc.as wellas testing the bejasus out of them.Toshiba is my recommendationin 32/36 with dolby digital

Stick with the Panasonic range as these produve NO artefacts, smearing etc like most models.

Do you require surround sound? I bought a Panasonic TX32PK20 a few weeks back, it's 100Hz and its running ntl digital tv and a dvd player and the picture is excellent. it's only nicam though so you'll need a seperate amp for your movies

How about the Hitachi C32W40DTN.

What's it like with fast moving images and dark scenes.
Any atrefacts, smearing etc.
I'm interested because I'm thinking of buying this or the 36" model.

Thanks

Kevo

This TV only has problems with fast moving images if the signal is 'letterbox' and it has expanded them vertically to fill the screen (It produces wavy horizontal lies across the image for a split second, not really bad but noticeable). 4:3 broadcasts expanded horizontally are fine, as are dark images. The set is downgradable (via on screen menu) to 50Hz and this clears the problems. All 'anamorphic' broadcasts, dvd's etc. are all displayed with no problems. One small problem worth mentioning is that it doesn't like fast moving, horizontally scrolling text, very difficult to read.

Hope this helps,

Raks55 how did you do the John Lewis price match? I'm interested to know because I would prefer to buy from them than elsewhere. What evidence do they need of price? I am thinking of getting John Lewis Kingston to match SDB in Chiswick. Will they do this or not?

TIA

Hey i was planning to buy a sony tv from SDB as well. But i didn't in the end. I saw the hitachi tv at john lewis, and i had remembered seeing it at home on the net at www.empiredirect.co.uk so i went home got the price, phone john lewis told them to do a price check, they got back to me after a couple of day, and i placed the order over the phone. I am not sure if they will match the price with SDB unless you give them a contact number. Phone them up and give them as much details as possible, they will get back to you in seven days to tell you if they will give it to you for a lower price or not. Give them a couple of web sites as well and tell them to check them out as a back ups if the SDB one deosn't work. So if they don't match it with SDB at least they will match it with another lower price.

You don't need any evidence since they do all the work them selves you just need to supply them details of the store or website.

I don't see the point in buying a TV from anywhere other than John Lewis. Not only do they price match competitors but also give a 5 year parts and labour guarantee as standard, which must be worth a few bob.
