Well the furore over Hallelujah has brought me belatedly to this thread. I didn't know it existed before, though I was at the O2 in the Summer. I've been a fan for almost 30 years. I'm so jealous of the poster who was at a concert just after the American election!
Anyhow, I'm just so glad it isn't the young lad from X factor doing this song.

Have just heard (via www.leonardcohenfiles.com) that Leonard is going to release a DVD of the 2008 tour in March 09 - apparently it will be the July date at the O2, so especially good for those of you who saw that one (I'm sure I can make do ) Fingers crossed it's the entire set list...
I was there in the O2 on that night in July. So far away Lenoard was a speck on the stage but hearing him live was fantastic and his musicians were incredible. A great night.

My daughter's just bought me Cohen Live CD for my birthday but great to know there's to be a DVD. Thanks.

I can only find the CD for sale on Amazon - NOT the DVD yet - am I missing something ? Although I have actually pre-ordered it from Play as it is half the price of Amazon for some reason.

Yes, weirdly Amazon UK doesn't have the region 2 DVD up yet, and it appears that it may be being released a week later in Europe (seems to be some confusion though). It can be preorded for 31st March date at

Play:
http://www.play.com/Music/MusicDVD/4...n/Product.html

and HMV:
http://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProduct...;-1&sku=940317

so who knows what's going on

There's also supposed to be a 'Best of' BluRay disc being released at the end of the tour, so we can enjoy Leonard in HD

No DVD, O2 or other, will fully recreate the magic of the Glastonbury performance

Leonard is unique in so many ways but the very personal nature of his work and the size of his back catalogue means a "Best Of" is impossible. Buy ALL his work and you decide.

I first saw Leonard in September 1974 at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester on the recommendation of my brother who had seen him at the Isle of Wight Festival.

Leonard's music has been a friend in bad times and good for nearly 35 years.

Halleluja!

I meant it's a 'best of' the current tour - but I do appreciate your point Lucky you to have seen him back in the 70s, oh for a time machine...

It's a shame he specifically requested the Glasto performance not be recorded - I know it wouldn't be the same as being there. but I'd still love to see/hear a recording of it (other than those shaky cams on YouTube )

It's one of the, very few, benefits of being so old!

I agree - I bought "The Essential..." and although it is brilliant and has a fantastic and large selection on it - it was incredible how much was missing that should have been on there. But like you say, impossible to choose for just one album, even a double album Basically, almost EVERYTHING he has ever done is ESSENTIAL

It is a great introduction though, for someone who is new to Leonard's songs.

It's so true - I don't disagree with a single song on it, and it is good for an introduction, but you just think how much more there should be on it... there's only one song from Songs of Love and Hate for instance, what about Avalanche?!

Yor post illustrates my point.

Songs of Love and Hate is my favourite album in that the songs hang together to make something more than the sum of it's parts. If that makes any sense!

True, I suppose that one, more than any other, needs to be heard as a whole - a masterpiece .

Got my DVD today, absolutely amazing, everything I expected and more I have to say that it contains probably the best version of Hallelujah I've ever heard:

http://www.garagetv.be/video-galerij...allelujah.aspx

It must have been amazing to be at that concert, I'm hoping New York on May 16th will be as good, can't wait!

It's so great seeing everything close up - I was quite near the front when I went, but obviously you can't see it in the same way. Leonard just looks so pleased that everyone's enjoying themselves

oh you LUCKY LUCKY person to be so close to The Maestro

I was in row T of the first tier - it was like they were ants on the stage - TG for the big screens. That is why I am sooooo looking forward to seeing the DVD. If I had known when I booked the tickets that he was going to extend the tour I would have waited and booked for a smaller venue. But hey...

I remember when we got to the O2 and we were queing for the loos before taking our seats ( rather earlier than strictly necessary ) - saying to the usherette " is HE here yet ? has HE arrived ? " and practically swooning because I was actually in the same building - UNDER THE SAME ROOF

I am not ashamed to say that I actually cried when he came on stage - and several times thereafter. The man is God

I know, it was amazing to be breathing the same air as the Maestro I was about 10 rows from the front at the O2, but I will be way back in the balcony in New York - I don't really care though, as the atmosphere will be the same.

You know he's coming back to the UK? Liverpool and Belfast in July, I'm hoping he'll add another London date, although I know that's a bit greedy

You won't be disappointed with the DVD - all the close-ups of Len you could wish! He looks so thrilled to be there, it's really touching. Anthem made me cry when I saw it live, and the DVD almost had the same effect. There are some great performances.

What can I say but magnificent!!

People say Leonard Cohen is depressing . How come this album is so exhilarating, so filled with joy and emotion that ist's truly life enhancing .

Leonard's dry wit, his voice, the superb music and the glorious Webb sisters. I feel truly privileged to have been there that night and to share it with so many others who appreciate this man's genius.

Got it on Wednesday and missed The Apprentice because I started to watch it and then couldn't tear myself away from it I cried all over again during A Thousand Kisses Deep. And laughed when everyone cheered at "... born with the gift of a golden voice " The man is DIVINE.

What was it that someone called out and he said " I heard that " ? I couldn't make it out

Make sure you catch a repeat of the Apprentice, it's a good one

That reading of A Thousand Kisses Deep is stunning So moving, I especially love the lines:

The autumn moved across your skin
got something in my eye
a light that doesn't need to live
and doesn't need to die

Tower of Song was fab too - he always goes extra low and rumbly for the 'golden voice' line, it's great

I couldn't catch what was said either when that guy called out, even on the CD which has better sound. They were yelling 'we love you Len' just before so I assume it was something along those lines. I'm so pleased he could see just how much everyone loves him - he is a legend

I know That gets tedious very quickly... I find his work very uplifting, and there's a lot of humour, especially in his later stuff.
