This doesn't necessarily mean she is a Time Lady or something to do with the Time Lords.

But it's still very nice to know why they chose her name - clearly she does have a larger part than the one we have seen her play so far, and she is something 'special', whatever that may end up to be.

If donna is indeed someone else be logical about it--it has to be someone we have already met in the new series or else it won't make sense to new viewers.

we all had the hots for romana 2 --well everyone over 35 anyway --but get over it --she was stuffed in the time war

There have been far too many references to Gallifrey and the Doctor's childhood in the last two series for RTD to leave it UN-exploited for a mega-climax that in effect - Specials aside - is to last for two years.

Don't forget - the REAL thread running through Series Four HASN'T been the Rose mini-cameos...it's been the Doctor's REAL NAME...and only the Time Lords know that, apart from people the Doctor MAY have told...”

Ahhh...I'm afraid I don't really remember all that, despite watching it avidly (though not obsessively I admit - no disrespect meant by that, by the way).

I think it would be an enormous dramatic conceit to bring in someone who an entire generation probably haven't even heard of. In impact terms it would hit the spot for the minority and leave the rest pretty cold I would have thought.

I would absolutely love it if Donna turns out to be Romana. We should remember that she was president of Gallifrey during the Time War... in all wars you usually try and protect your leader... one way of protecting (like the master) was with the fob watch....

Second point... RTD has said he wants to wipe the slate clean as far as everything he has invented... ok so perhaps the time war will be unravelled and Romana becomes president of Gallifrey again?

What I really dont want to happen to Donna is for her to die as some kind of martyr to save Earth.

To be fair... they would need to have made a big thing out of Romana in a previous episode... introduced the character made her known to the new fans...big special on her in Confidential etc... they have not done that.. However... many new fans have (if not watched all the old episodes) have read all about the Doctor's older adventures... my 11 year old probably knows more about the older characters than me... and I lived through it first time around...

so... who knows...

Really? I would have thought Romana 1 was the one the lads would fancy. There was something a bit dirty about her.

Way back RTD said that it was Romana that was Lord President of Gallifrey during the Time War.

The fact TOM BLAND and DAFT disagree with it is one of the main reasons I want it to be true - Donna is Romana!!!

Do I think Donna is Romana? Yes
Do I want Donna to be Romana? Yes
Do I think it would make sense in terms of the story and what we have seen in the past? Yes
Am I right? Probably not. RTD is a wiser and cleverer man than me.

Brilliant!!! TOM BLAND - Mr Thickety Thick Thick Thick Thick. In a programme based completely on Time Travel let's leave the past alone! If he had an ounce of humour in him I would think he was being ironic.

There's a bit of Romana Theory out there.

But the thing they miss about Donna being Romana is... if Donna is going to die, then that could be in the same way in which 'John Smith' died at the end of Family of Blood when The Doctor opened the fob watch.

A mate of mine said to me the other day he saw a bit this season where Wilf had a fob watch... if anyone's got a screengrab of that I'd love to know when it was!

Incidentally, despite his sixties Who Dalek film, wasn't Bernard Cribbins up for the role of The Doctor after Pertwee?

Yes, Bernard said exactly this on the One Show last week. He had one or two meetings, but it never went any further

I've never even thought of it before reading this thread, but wouldn't it be nice if Donna was a "chameleon-arched" Romana? I mean, just nice! It wouldn't matter the "bringing back a character a generation has never heard of" thing, what about the Master? The series never needed himto be revived and the episode didn't go into all his previous dealings with the doctor, all the audience needed to know was they were enemies, and it worked, same with Sarah Jane ('cept they were friends, not enemies) Audience accepted her as one of the Doctor's old friends, without explaining everything they ever did.

It seems sad that the Doctor lost EVERYTHING in the Time War, but all the bad guys, the Daleks, the Master and now Davros, all survived! It's like the Time Lords died for nothing!

I'm secretly hoping there's a hiden timelord colony out there, with access to the eye of harmony, waiting for the moment to rise again.

I do believe the series needs the timelords again, and maybe Romana returning could be a good starting point....

oh its's silly'o'clock in the morning and I'm rambling

If they do bring Romana back and it doesn't turn out to be Donna, who do you think could play her?
I dunno why but whenever I think about it Christina Cole pops in my head. But she did play Lilith in The Shakepeare Code so I dunno.

oh, you again. And still persisting with the 'oh so witty' name changes...i see you've added Daft to your repotoire. Thats two you've come up with now all by yourself. (i obviously lack the killer sense of humour you have been blessed with...do you own a pair of family guy socks in lieu of a personality?)

If my point about constant references to old characters and plot points in doctor who appearing in the new series went over your head then i can only apologise. i thought it was one of my more reasoned posts and at least 2 or 3 other forum members wholeheartedly seemed to agree (are they thick as well?).

your post on the other hand is a mess of cheap jibes, exclamation marks to disguise the fact you have very little to say and poor logic. you say at one point you think Donna is Romana yet give no explanation as to why. then 4 sentences later you say you think you're probably wrong.

and you say you think it would make sense for Donna to be Romana but yet again, nothing to back this remark up is forthcoming. please do elaborate...

There are certainly similarities between Donna and Romana and these can't be ignored!

1) They're both female
2) They both know the Doctor
3) They've both been in the Tardis

er um, sorry i was thinking of the Rani again

My memory is vague, but did Romana 1 just appear in the Tardis at the beginning of the Key to Time series? This maybe similar to Donna's transportation into the Tardis in the Runaway Bride.

And I remember Romana 2 's regeneration was actually from a body that was a part of the Key to Time. Callufrax was in the Key to time series and mentioned as one of the missing planets.

hami24 - I wish it were true! Romana was a fab character and to get her back would be fantastic. But if you know anything of the Gallifrey audio adventures the last story Panecea (sp) ended on a cliff hanger of Gallifrey dying of social destruction so a special group of Time Lords of which President Romana was one escaped to an unknown location outside of time and were basically trapped there..............
