I've used dial a phone twice and on both occasions this has happened. I ordered a phone on C902 on Vodafone, I got an email saying the was a problem and to contact them, So I did, I got told "You have not been accepted on Vodafone but we can do that on o2" which was fine but it makes me wonder if there is an alterior motive, Same happened last year when I wanted a K810i on 3, I got accepted on Orange instead

P4U do have different terms with different networks. They will chase the money.

4u have a massive VF target to chase so would push you onto voda if they could.

The DAP agreements are different to 4u however...

So, what are the dial-a-phone "agreements"?

Credit rating (or lack off) You've no doubt been good with your finances over the years, hence you've had no trouble.

OP, the various operators all have different criteria for customers to meet with regards to your credit rating. You were probably rejected by Vodafone on this basis, but O2 may well have less stringent credit status requirements hence you can get a contract with them.

Thats strange.

I would imagine my mum has a terrible credit rating (missed mortgage payments, arrears, low income etc.) but there are two vodafone contracts (£40 and £25) in her name, they were both through phones 4 u as well (mobiles2yourdoor and dialaphone).

Dap are part of p4u though
They are but they are run as two separate entities as DAP are an acquisition, not a new subsidy of 4u, unlike mobiles2yourdoor.

For this reason the agreements with DAP will stick until the end of the remaining contract.

Example:
You buy an o2 deal from p4u online or over the phone, you can not port you existing number from ANY network.

You buy an o2 deal from DAP and you have 30 days to port your number....

Strange I know but hey, I'm just a minion in the corporate world!

I thought number portability was a regulatory requirement?

To allow a customer to port AWAY from the network, yes.
To not allow a customer to port in is stupid imho, turns a lot from the respective networks....
