I've just looked at Futura's web site and seen that he has there are two 3.7 Firmwares is it worth 'upgrading' my box to the other one?

Futaura may be along to confirm or correct this but whether it is worth changing I think depends on which version of 3.7 you have, which in turn depends on which brand you have and when your unit was made. As reported on futaura's site the Evesham units have some quirks and the Build Date 2007-07-04 version on my Hitachi HDR161 made in July 2007 has an erratic Rewind facility. Others have reported satisfactory Rewind on their T816s on 3.7. What brand and Build Date does your unit have?

It also depends on whether the software you want is obtainable.

Since it is an Evesham unit, I presume it has the 2007-06-21 build - the same one that I happen to have been using for nearly a year, until recently. I suppose if the quirks mentioned on my site don't bother you, then it isn't really worth changing to another build. But in my case I did find it really annoying that an accidental or intentional press of the GUIDE button during playback caused the resume position to be lost when exiting the EPG. That was reason enough for me to change to the slightly older 3.7 build. Of course, if you are using the 2007-06-21 build at the moment and for some reason you find some new problems after changing to the 2007-05-12 build, you can always change back to the other build.

Thanks Futura, that's pretty well what I was thinking, I just wasn't sure that the Eveshan would accept the othre code.

I my previous professional life (not customer electronincs) I have met devices that are the same but have an product line ID in an OTP and can only run the appropriate firmware build even thought they are techinically capable of running any of them.

I conclude from that, that I would be better of changing to the 2007-05-12 build to improve the Rewind functionality on my Hitachi?

I'm a bit reluctant to risk attempting to fiddle with my unit as I don't have a serial port on my PC and I have had crashing problems using a Serial/USB adaptor when changing software on my Technotrend PVR. I'd hate to wreck my Hitachi.

Actually, I don't think there is any difference between the rewind operation in all three v3.7 builds. I've used the two that you haven't and I have to say that both share the problems that you've described having with the Hitachi build. It's certainly nowhere near as smooth and correct compared to the T810. Like you, I tend to use the skip button to jump 2 mins backwards and then fast forward back up to the correct point.

AH! thanks for that. It seems my memory has let me down. I thought there were differences in Rewind performance on the different 3.7 versions. I recall exchanging views with parthena on this but maybe she was referring to her T810 at the time.

Yes, it was the T810, which I made twin-record as you know. (I'm following this avidly, hoping for a miracle here for the Evesham )

I made the change over the weekend, I now have the ability to go to a channel from the guide, but I have the FFwd/Play icon problem that the Evesham version didn't show.

Recordings were pretty jumpy over the weekend but the weather may be to blame for that - at least partly.

For the benefit of folks like me who don't have easy access to the power plug you can initiate a cold start and update by pressing the power button for 10 seconds.

I'll give it a few days and then decide wich set of the bugs that are different between the 3.7 versions are less annoying to us (and your views may differ)

What problem is that? Can't say I noticed anything different in that regard.

I'm now re-thinking about what I said earlier about the RW problem on the T816. Based on comments on here I had originally come to the conclusion that there were differences between the RW performance on the individual versions of 3.7. But following you comment that you thought there was no differences and parthena's reference to her T810 I assumed that I had got it wrong, and was confusing the T816 with the T810. Now I'm thinking again there are differences. I vaguely recall that PTD said something about this which was helpful.

I do use RW a lot, mainly when Skip overshoots an advert break and I want to find the precise programme restart point. Skipping back 2m and then F/Forwarding is a way round this but it does take longer than a reliable burst of RW. This aspect is the biggest annoyance I have with my T816. I often want to rewind a few seconds to re-hear a bit of dialogue I missed the first time but this is a frustrating process on my Hitachi (build date 2007-07-04).

Sometimes the FFwd/Rwd or jump icon doesn't go away - a colleague here gets it on his non Evesham T816, I didn't notice it on the Evesham F/W. Can't honestly say I've checked your bug listing to see if it is there though - sorry.

And having got sick of some hard crashes (needing the power plug pulling - 10 second press of the power button didn't work) I've gone back the the Evesham 3.7 build

Can't say I've had any problems like that. The only disadvantage I've seen is that I've been getting the 3 hour recording problem a lot more often, and even on BBC channels, but I suppose that could be transmitter related and not the software. Then again, having two T816 boxes using the same 3.7 build on the same aerial, on one occasion both boxes were set to record the same programme - one worked fine, whilst the other over-recorded by 3 hours or so. So, probably the Digihome 2.4 and 3.7 builds are just as bad as each other in this respect, with the Evesham 3.7 build being better.

Yeah we got a few of those which I'd not seen before (too soon to say since going back). As you say there semms to be a common majority of bugs, and a few differneces between the 3.7s - pick the one you find less annoying (and avoid frustartion of having two of the same machines side by side to make it look worse
