I had this technique (think it's called an IM nailing) done a couple of years ago following a fall. I wasn't quite as lucky as Nush though as there were no orthopaedic surgeons available to do the op for 4 days so I was left immobile with no treatment other than haphazard pain relief from Friday to Monday, which was an absolute nightmare.
The day after the op, the physio was badgering me to get out of bed and start using the crutches already - I think by then I'd outstayed my welcome! Although the first fortnight was Pain City, within five weeks of the accident I was back at work, walking slowly and gingerly, both otherwise normally. There are still scars, but they're quite small, and although I was initially self-conscious about them, no one's ever really noticed them!
I would recommend to Nush the internet support group mybrokenleg.com which is a great place to share good and bad news, and find out more about treatment options and prognoses. I hope her recovery is as quick and complete as mine was, and would just suggest 2 things to anyone in the same predicament - take bags of Calcium, and give up smoking - you'll knock weeks off your bone repair time.
