My Panasonic CRT TV is Flickering but only seems to be at my house.

Hello all, I have a problem and it is driving me insane. Last week I brought a 36" Panasonic CRT television model number TX - W36D3DP/U from the local ad trader. The man I brought it from showed me it working and although its quite an old TV I thought the picture quality was excellent and brought it off him for £80.
Anyway when I took it home after about 20 minutes of being on the screen started to flicker at the top (about 5 inches wide, horizotically) and sometimes the whole screen would go black quickly for a split second. Anyway I phoned the man and he said that this had never happened before. Also strangely enough when I used my XBOX 360 the screen was fine. I have now relised that this is because the XBOX is set to 60 Hz PAL because as soon as I changed it to 50 Hz PAL the screen flcikers again.
Any way I took it to my local TV repair shop as they said they will look at it and after leaving it on for over 5 hours they could see no flickering on normal TV and showed me and sure enough there wasn't.
So I took it home, set it back up and sure enough it flickered again. I have tried swapping scart leads, using a anolog port instead of scart and all sorts. I am completely baffled. I dont want to throw this away as it would appear to work everywhere but at my house. And if the XBOX is set to 60 Hz it fine. Also it flickers when I put my DVD player on aswell. Can anyone help with any suggestions or perhaps come accross this themselves before. Is there anyway I can change the Sky Box output to 60hz I order for the picture to be good aswell? Any help would be most appreicated.

have you tried another RF cable?

is it when you watch something with scart it happens?

Hi. Thank for responding. I have. I took all the scart leads out and put Sky through the RF lead and again the screen flickers. If I turn off Sky, the DVD or XBOX and leave the AV screen blank, it still flickers. The only time it doesnt is when the XBOX is set at 60 hz. But yet it worked at the TV repair shop and the person's house I brought it from. Its so wierd.

in the tv set up menu is there an option for 50/60 hz settings?

Hi. No there isn't. In fact the set up menu is very basic considering how expensive the TV was once. There is an anti flicker option but this seems to make no difference. It really is baffling. I am not at home at the moment but I have just phoned Panasonic who had only one suggestion would was to put the TV on shipping conditions which would reset the whole TV back to the original settings. Might be worth a punt but I can't really see how this would make any difference.

Any chance the TV is too close to a strong magnetic source like speakers? That can cause flickering or colour distortion on a CRT.

Hi. That is a good question. The only speakers that are near to it are the speakers that came with the TV and my DVD player's Sub Woofer and a couple of little speakers that i use for the surround system with the dvd. I did try the tv with the dvd player off but would they still possibly cause interference when switched off. also would that not affect the tv at 60 hz aswell. Thanks for all the help everyone. Just joined DS yesterday and am amazed at how helpful you all are.

Speakers (or more correctly the magnets inside them) will cause interference all the time they are close to the TV. Whether or not the amplifier driving them is turned on, or even if they are not connected to anything.

Try moving the speakers well away (6 feet or more to start with) from the TV. After all I don't suppose you dragged them over to the repair shop or the guy you got the TV from did you? So that is one difference between your set up at home and the other locations you've used the TV in. Which makes the speakers one suspect in the plot.

If moving the speakers cures the problem then you have the solution. Just don't put them back so close. The sub can go anywhere really, it doesn't have to live under the telly for instance.

If the speakers prove to be innocent then it's a case of move other stuff round untill the real culprit reveals itself. Lots of trial and error (more of the latter probably and a few words you wouldn't want your mum catching you using as well )

Not exactly sure why it should be OK at 60Hz but then again there are no hard and fast rules in this game!

Hi. Thanks for your replies. I have just tried moving the TV around the lounge and even wheeled it insto the hall. Since no joy. When I go on an AV channel but with nothing on I have noticed that there is 3 very thin horizontal lines going accross. They are blue, green and red in colour. This the the main part that flickers but I have now noticed that this have different colours. Since again go on 60hz on XBOX and absolutely fine. Cant think what else I can do

Oh and there is a thin red line going accross the middle of the screen. Im so gutted about this as this is the first time i had a good tv and one week later.. it doesnt look so good. Its still wired about how it is OK for about the first 10 minutes of turning it on and then it acts like this. Also still weird how it worked at the tv repair shop and the previous owner's house. Oh well maybe I am cursed.

OK. I think I am going to end this rather boring problem. I have decided to just put the TV on ebay but advertise it as only suitable as a games TV on 60 Hz. No doubt some kid out there who only uses an XBOX 360 will buy it. Then I will stop being tight and buy something decent instead. Cheers for all your help on this anyway guys.

Hi. I know I said that I was going to sell this on ebay but instead have decided to take it to the TV repair shop again. They have had it a while now but this time say that it does flicker , so it cant be to do with anything magnetic in my home. They say they have ordered a chip that may fix it and if it doesnt then it may as well go in the bin. Anyone on here have any idea on what the chip could be and if you think that it could work? Just intrieged as I thought that the TV may have been unfixable.
