I have a Panasonic DMR-E55EB DVD recorder which to date has been reliable (it must be about three years old). However, it has been depowered for the last three months and is now behaving oddly, in that it simply "cuts out" after a few minutes even when it's doing nothing (appears completely dead, no display, no reaction to power switch etc etc) and can only be restarted by pulling the mains cable.

Well I've been doing that for most of today and FINALLY I think it's hanging on, I've probably repowered it thirty times. I had tried a shipping reset to no avail.

Now I had similar problems with a Philips DVDR610 (which I now leave permanently powered if we're away) so it looks as though the Panansonic will join it. Not very green....

Anyone else had similar probs?

This was a common problem with the power supply.

There's a few threads knocking around about this issue.

Yes, the Panasonic DVD/HDD recorders have been VERY unreliable, you can now buy repair kits for them from places like CHS Ltd.

According to reports, they used the exact same PSU as recorders without an HDD, ignoring the fact of the much higher power required.

Thanks chaps, seems I'm not alone.

It's been OK now for about four hours so; perhaps like me in the mornings it's finally woken up properly.

I'll leave it powered from now on......

it's a 4 year old recorder,[available from april 2004],rather than 3 years old,i thought it was 5 years old as i had the panasonic E50 5 years ago, similar model numbers.
Anyway,i've worn out two recorders since you got yours, panasonic E50 lasted under 3 years, and a pioneer which i bought after the panasonic lasted much the same time.
They don't appear to build things to any great quality now,i used my dvd recorder for roughly 150 recordings each in their entire lifetime and both dvd drives went,i played a couple of films a day,i thought these things might last longer as at £300 to £400 it's not cheap.

Posted with the best of intentions

It's not safe to leave equipment "powered on" and unattended when you know it contains faulty components.

It would be better to get the part(s) replaced before there is any further risk of damage to the PSU's circuit board.

Fair comment Alan; if I do leave it on it'll be somewhere where it can't start a fire (outbuilding)

See the AV Forums:

I'll copy this post into the AV forums link......

Yes, it was the Voltage Regulator - I got a local electrician (Bill Fox of Street!) to solder on the new VR after I ordered it from the named source in the AV forums thread.

Panny didnt want to know, Panny 'service agents' estimated £70+ for the repair.

As well as Bill (who charged me a bottle of red!), I also had a gratis offer from an AV company in Wells called Eflatminor (thanks to Jules) who were not needed as Bill was on my doorstep!

A resolution but no thanks to Panny.

Rgds,
