was that the Dirvla Kirwan character? I doubt it. Maybe they won't actually introduce the "long term" companion just yet, more likely to wait until the 3 specials next year to introduce them. Whoever it is Moffatt will probably have some input on the selection if they are going to be working with them in 2010, and I expect he won't want to do too much with the characters in the specials aside from one introductory episode, so that he can save all the best storylines and character arcs for the full series.

My guess:
Each special will be a different companion, at the end of Christmas special 2009 the doctor will regenarate.

In May 2010 series 5 will begin as a total reboot new doctor, new companion.

Astrid, Jenny or new character.

Personally, I'm hoping for Astrid. Didn't expect much from Kylie, but I was surprised at her acting, and the character seems to have a bit of depth.

The Doctor can't handle foes like the Cybermen next Xmas WITHOUT a companion to stop him being the megalomaniac killer. THAT was the point "Left Turn" reinforced. He has to have a "check" on his behaviour as a Time Lord, he needs a Human Touch - so it has to be a REAL human...

I'm quite curious abut who we'll welcome as the new companion. I have liked each one of the companions so far in their own ways but I think that Ten shouldn't be alone.
I'm quite curious about why there was a brief shot of Dirvla Kirwan, maybe she'll be next in line.

I'd quite like to see both Sarah Jane and Luke travel with the Doctor.... I never saw her time travelling with the doctor.

I'd like to see Mickey join him full time too but I suspect he's TW-bound.

I hope they don't have Jenny as the next companion, I think she'd irritate me after a bit to be honest.

yeah, I can't see there being a regular companion appearing in the special's cos it'd be too hard to properly establish the character in just a few stories over such a long space of time. We'll prob's just get one-off companions... Although the door is open for at least one former New-Who companion to make a reappearance or two, who still has her memory and isn't in in a parallel universe shacked up with the Docclone
