Toshiba 37WLT66 "stain" fault

With some background colours we're now getting a large darker "stained" area, as shown here to the LHS; it looks like sticking pixels but there must be hundreds involved. Against a white (and most lighter colour) backgrounds nothing shows.

The set is out of guarantee, but any engineers out there with any idea of what's causing this and if it's fixable?

Looks like dirt inside the LCD panel, commonly caused by smoking - only cure is to replace the LCD panel, which costs about the same as (or more than) a new set.

But then surely it should be present (and even more obvious) on a white picture?

I don't know, but it's not an unknown problem, I've seen two like it (and heard of others through other engineers) - it almost certainly requires the LCD panel replacing.
