DOUGIE Freedman will reluctantly plunge into the loan market after his search for a permanent centre-back partner for Paddy McCarthy hit a brick wall.
The Eagles boss opted not to pursue a deal for South African triallist Morgan Gould on Wednesday after being put off by Supersport United's £500,000 price tag. Instead he will now look to get at least one central defender in on loan, with two unnamed Premier League clubs already being approached.
Arsenal youngster Kyle Bartley has been linked, but while Freedman admits he would love to bring the 19-year-old to Selhurst Park he doesn't believe the Gunners would agree to a deal.
"I didn't want to have to go to the loan market at this stage," he said. "I'd hoped to get at least one more centre back in on a permanent deal and then possibly utilise the loan market at the end of August when things are more settled in the Premier League, and they know exactly who they want and who they don't want.
"But the reality is I need a centre back now. I can't hang around anymore.
"We've already made enquiries about two Premier League defenders with Championship experience and are waiting to hear back."
Asked specifically about Bartley, Freedman replied: "Look I'd love to have him, but realistically I'm not sure that one is doable."
The decision not to pursue Gould was not one the Eagles boss took lightly. The Bafana star impressed during his week long stay with the team, but Freedman felt it wasn't quite the value he was looking for at that price.
"Morgan did well," he said. "But I am working to a very tight budget here and, to spend that amount of money, I would have expected him to go straight into the side and play a large number of games. I'm not sure he was quite ready for that."
The decision not to go for Gould has led to speculation that a deal for long-term target Anthony Gardner is back on.
However, Freedman said that while the door is not closed, unless Gardner agrees to take a severe wage cut, he will not be joining Palace.
"There is still a chance with Anthony," he said. "It's purely the financial side of things that is holding that back. We have offered him what we are prepared to go to and we will not move on that. We have a strict wage cap in place and it doesn't matter who the player is, we will not go over it."
French triallist Fracois Marque, who played the final 20 minutes at Wycombe, is expected get another chance to impress at Crawley.
