TV Sound Problem
Ok i have a "32" Toshiba HD TV. I have a Yamaha RX-V363 amplifier connected to my Sky HD Box via optical. My TV has built in freeview so why can i not get the same sound as i do on the Sky Channels. When watching Analogue or freeview i have to turn up the volume on the TV Remote, is here no way of using the amp so the Freeview and analogue channels work just like the Sky.

You need to check your TVs user manual and see where its audio is output from...usually a couple of phono outputs on the back. |

I'd connect them to a spare input on the amp, which would be another red and white phono I'd imagine.

Model of TV is a Toshiba 32C3030DB "32". Like ive said currently i have just put the red and white cables into the left and right Jacks on the TV, then i have gone to the amp and but the other red and white to DTV/CBL. As i have stated i have a Built in freeview tuner and normal Analogue TV. When watching SKY HD i use HMDI2 HMDI1 is for playstation 3 which is connected via HMDI whilst DTV which is Freeview and Analogue have there own channels. All i want to do if possible is let the amp control all the Stations, but at the moment it will only control the Sky.

Page 7 of your TVs user manual shows the audio left/right phono outputs and states
"In addition there is a fixed external audio ouput which enables the connection of a suitable Hi-Fi unit. Make sure the Speaker option in the Sound menu is set to Off." The set also has a digital audio output and states... "The Digital Audio Output socket enables the connection of a suitable surround sound system. NOTE: this output is always active." So for surround sound you need a lead from here to your amp. This is all detailed in your user manual. |

How would that work john. Sorry for not being to tech on this. Because at the moment i only have skyhd optical to my amp. Is it just case of connecting the other optical lead to the tv and then putting that into the adapter.

Do not use an optical splitter in reverse to join two optical outputs to one optical input. If you do you will have to turn off the TV when watching Sky so you can hear the Sky sound. Not very practical really!
If the TV is optical out and you have a coaxial in on the amp then simply go down to your local Maplin shop and buy an optical to coaxial converter. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=29293 The alternative is to use an optical switch. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=35241 I would never use a splitter in reverse. As the name suggests the true purpose of a splitter is to take one output and split it to feed two inputs. They can work in reverse but they were not designed for this and have all kinds of compromises. Such as only having one source switched on at a time to avoid interference. As I said a bit impractical if you want to wacth Sky on the TV and both are connected via the same splitter! As they say "right tool for the job" So either convert optical to coaxial or use a switch. Either will cause you far less hassle in the long run. |
