Speakers for Onkyo 606 - advice please
User X
08-07-2008
Just bought my first amp off Richer Sounds - Onkyo605 for £340 and need advice on a decent speakers set. Currently just using 5.1 set from the Technics sc-dv280. As I'm not a pro I'm not sure how much better will the sound get with more advanced speakers, although I'm sure there is a potential.
Basically I'm thinking of 2 floorstanders, like these AS, combined with smaller bookshelves for 5.1 and possibly another 2 for 7.1. Hoping to keep cost as low as possible.
Any advice will be much appreciated and will help me not to end up buying some rubbish off ebay

My first post by the way, and the forum is just great! Thanks for reading!

My setup:
Sony Bravia KDL 40V3000 (1080p)
Humax Foxsat HD Freesat Receiver
Sony Vaio VGN AR51J With Blu-ray
Onkyo TX-SR606 A/V Receiver
5.1 Speaker set from Technics SC-DV280

KEFs from richer sounds or just the speakers you are using just now

is it the 605 or the 606 you got ( hopefully 606 )

Yea that's definately 606 - I was going for 605, but they had none left (at least in the Birmingham branch) and I didn't want to come back with nothing, and it cost me some extra.
KEFs for £300? They're not very cheap tbh and kinda ugly, arn't they? How about those AE ones in a link? Although if there's not much to be gained I'd rather keep those I have...

dont think you will hear much different from the rear speakers

the front will maybe be better, but I would just use the ones you have

glad you got the 606

Thanks for advice! I'm a bit surprised that noone's saying that I'm wasting a good amp with speakers from low-end system.

the amps the important thing

speakers are important too but if your happy with the sound stick with them

That's the thing I w'ont be happy untill I get 100% out of the amp otherwise what's the point in spending few hundred quid when you already have reasonably sounding system. I think my current setup is not loud enough and it makes a kind of a cracking sound at a higher volumes.

Tannoy mercury range are well reviewed, you could buy the entire package or start with the fronts then add the centre and surrounds as funds become available, that way you would have a matching set all round.

I've got the onkyo 606 and use QAcoustics 1000i series. A little pricey but for the 606 they are just really entry level. No crackling. Can handle audio at high definition at whatever level of volume, so that you can hear everything without it being LOUD. Superb

I think the Kef's will sound very lean and bright compared with the Technics whose 'house sound' is very warm and inoffensive. Yes u will hear loads more detail but that might become tiring when watching an action movie or listening to music. AE's will be a bit similar but a tad warmer. Tannoys on the other hand are a lot warmer sound and will be better suited to the Onk if u like the sound u have now. I have a Pioneer AV amp which sounded horribly lean and bright with Kef floorstanders but the Tannoy R2's I use now are well matched. Get Richer sounds to hook up the different speakers to the 606 and listen for yourself, not everbody likes the same sound and the only way to be sure is to listen first.

I have the Kef 3005 system with a £1000 Amplifier & have to say the results are stunning. These speakers can usually be picked up for around £599 or the SE version £999 (and they don't sound any better - I tried them!)

The 2005 system for £399 sounds almost as good & will be a vast improvement over the cheap floorstanders you favour.

Don't be put off by the fact that they are satelites, they produce a fantastic dynamic & open sound & the "Sweat Spot" is wherever you sit due to the unique design of the tweeters. I rate Kef highly as you may have gathered but no I don't work for them!

Can't go wrong with Bowers & Wilkins,
But here's a company that few people know about. The subwoofer I bought from them weighs more than I do, and is the size of 1 1/2 washing machines. That coupled with my B&W's is phenomenal. I'm usually easily persuaded to keep buying the newest and latest, but I've not heard a better combination. I'm changing NOTHING!
