I bet Harold Saxon fiddled his expenses all the time!

Back in the day, the Doctor was a *far* more effective killing machine.

From Pertwee's lethal Venusian death grip, to Troughton's wooden recorder with the poison darts, and Hartnell with his trusty chainsaw, the Whos of yesteryear were a formidable force, scything down the opposition until the very walls of the TARDIS were splattered with blood, sinew and bone.

Pertwee could barely disguise his glee as the Brigadier ordered the explosion that would entomb the Silurians in their base - if memory recalls, he had the distinction of being the one to press the button.

Equally, I'll never forget Tom's insane and maniacal laughter as he threw Harrison Chase into the grinding machine, nor the delight he showed when Noah self-destructed the Wirrn escape vessel.
That's the *Who* I want to see back. The one who'll put a bullet between the bad guys' eyes before they even realise he's there.

And yet Doctor Tom got all moral and couldn't wipe out the Daleks in Genesis.

Anyway, after the Time War I'm sure he had seen enough death and does want to save everyone.

I almost hesitate to use the word "clique" but that is what much of DW fandom had I'm afraid become. A group of fans holding on to something which had gone into the past, and never looked like becoming a mainstream force ever again.
People endlessly said that they wanted DW to return to TV, but as is often the case, when they finally got what they said they wanted, it just wasn't right any more.

Millions and millions of people suddenly became DW fans. Being a DW fan suddenly wasn't "special" any more. I think that some people resented that, and that's why they are picking holes in the current incarnation of DW at every opportunity, in a "something that popular must have something wrong with it" sort of way.

I'm not saying that their criticisms aren't valid in many cases, I've made many myself, and there are plenty of individual things in all episodes that I could criticise and justify that criticism. However I wish that some of the people (no names!) who are making sweeping generalisations about the perceived poor quality of the new series as a whole would just stop and think, and ask themselves why their attitude is so negative.

That's my rant over!

Here here. I was a massive Dr Who fan in the days when it was off the air and I'll admit that for me it had a special place because no other child of my age had the show because it wasn't on. That's why it's such a treasured part of my growing up.

Then when the new series got relaunched I was dead chuffed when it was good and pleased that people were recognising Who for the brilliant show it can be.

I'll never forget working in a school during the first series and having some children run down the corridor shouting 'exterminate, exterminate'. It made me happy!!

I can't imagine why anyone would resent the success of their favourite show (though clearly some people do). I was glad to be able to share it with other people.

And to the poster who mentioned Morbius and City of Death, we can all cherry pick some classic stories which are just that, but there's a whole load of absolute dog poo stories from the classic era too!

I love that feeling too...when your walking by and some child mentions something about DW and so on.....it just goes to show that the Show has done well with what it aimed to do....create a new generation of fans......
