What do you think of the Pioneer VSX 817?

Hello

I just bought this amp for £120 and it looks like its very good value for the money.

I got the one in black as well as I think it looks better.

I bought this to replace my old Kenwood krf v4060d as this is only 5 X 50 watts.

And it can do more sound modes.

Yes but £300 is alot to spend on just the amp.
Then you have to get the speakers.

might be twice the cost but last twice as long

If it has all the connections you need then, at that price, it's a very good deal. There's no HDMI in's or out's, and no facility for HD Audio, but this would not be a major concern for the majority of the population.

Why recommend a product way over the budget stated? You may as well say "buy a Dolby Lake"

Incidentally, the Onkyo 606 is a £400 product, the first question potential purchasers should ask is "do I really need the extra 2 HDMI inputs?". If the answer is no, I would say pick up a 605 while you still can and pocket the £100 change for your next upgrade. Before I get shot for recommending last years model, try auditioning the two side by side, if feel you will hear hardly any discernible difference between them.

I've just bought one of these on the same deal, and it'll do for me as I haven't yet been seduced by any HD stuff I've seen, other than the Kuro range, and only watch 10 or 12 hours of telly per week anyway, and 1/2 of that's usually DVD/XviD/DivX or TV recordings.

I've got a pretty good upscaling Pioneer DVD recorder, for if/when it's required, and a Panasonic Widescreen CRT set up properly with bog standard sky+ (including self-installed 250BG HDD),and most folks who've seen it are genuinely blown away with the PQ,especially when watching & listening to any source via the Pioneer.

Do I want or need to splash out 2 - £3000 on a complete new AV system just to keep up with the Jones?.....never in a squillion years.

The kidz & their mates reckon it looks & sounds brilliant, and that recommendation's more than good enough here, especially considering many of 'em come from materialistically competitive areas/households where the most complicated thing they can set up properly is the kettle.....and believe me some of 'em even struggle with that.
