250GB or 160GB?

Hi All,
Just bought a Thompson box. Bargain price! John Lewis Cribbs Causeway only £72! 250GB model.

But when I look through the menus on the box it tells me I only have around 70hours of space left -- and no recordings yet! And nothing yet downloaded on the free Topup trial service. So where`s the `up to 180 hours` gone...?

Instruction book says the box has two partitions for recording. But I can`t find info on the size of each. If I have 70 hours of free space showing do I assume I have around 100 hours of space tucked away waiting for the Topup downloads?

Can I choose the size of these invisible partitions?

Or have I been sold a 160GB model even though it clearly states 250GB on the front?

Your advice much appreciated.

Oh - and box seems to run very hot if left on 24 hours. Can I turn it off during the day and just leave it on overnight for the updates? Seems an awful waste of electricity. Will I lose all my preference settings?

mine is 70 hours recording and it is the 160gb version,i have all the top up tv channels disabled so no space is needed for those,if yours are all enabled at the moment that will explain some of the missing recording time.
Yes it is just a waste of electricity, stand by mode uses virtually the same power as normal mode.
I don't find the box especially hot,i'd make some alterations on mine for cooling if it was,but mine is fine,i've already taken it apart to check the hard drive on the pc.

That is a bargain

Have you registered with TUTV, and put the card in?
What channels do you have selected in the Customise TUTV Anytime menu?

I assume the partitions are referrring to your own recordings, and the TUTV Anytime downloads....you can find out how much each uses by going into the Customise TUTV Anytime menu. At the botom it says the following:

TUTV hours/week XX
Personal disk space XX

Only by deactivating some or all the TUTV Anytime channels

You won't lose any settings, but the DTR needs to be in at least Standby mode at 11:30am every day to receive the 14 day EPG updates and VoD schedules

Thanks for prompt response.

Have registered for the free 30day TopUp TV trial (but will cancel it as it`s rubbish) and have disabled all but four or five channels.

Some programmes downloaded last night -- now says 80 hours free. Very confusing. I bought the 250GB version expecting over 100 hours.

Will have a look at those pesky partitions and report back.

Does run hot; little bit of noise; big waste of electricity.

Planned to turn it off in the day, but comment re:egp makes me wonder if I can do that. I thought it had to be on overnight, not in the day...

Thanks again. Keep it coming. And - yes - it was a bargain IF it IS a 250GB model! (On the help page it listed it with a 16 prefix which refers to the 160GB model!)

That's normal for 250GB, as is "80GB" with things recorded and four or five channels selected

Checked the above:
TUTV partition = 60 hours
Personal disc space = 80 hours

So do I assume you add the two together to get total hours of approx 140 hours?

Also, was the "leave it on at 11.30am correct? Did you mean 11.30pm?

Thanks again, Art
