Why is my GSM phone locked?
Babelicious

Hi Guys, I have a Nokia 8600 which i got last year on contract, it's GSM which means it should be open. My contract is on orange but until recently i have been able to put my tmobile and o2 sim cards in there without any problems. Now it asks for a security code. I cancelled my orange contract and they sent me a pay n go sim card but even though its the same network as my contract it is still askin for a security code. Why is this and how can i change it.

GSM doesnt mean its unlocked. GSM - Global Standards for Mobile, just means its able to work on a 2G GSM network (as opposed to 2G CDMA, or 3g UMTS). It still can be network locked.

That said, that you've been able to change sims suggests it was unlocked. The Phone may be asking you for the PIN or PUK?

The security code sounds like it is a PIN code you need to enter at startup
(either a SIM card PIN code or handset-related) OR it could be a handset-related security code you need to enter to access some functionality e.g. unlocking keypad or accessing menu etc.

If its a Nokia then the Security Code is unrelated to the SIM. The default is 12345 or 1234. Unless you changed it. If it was to do with the SIM it would ask for the PIN.

This is true, at some point you must have turned "phone security" on. This means that the phone will ask you for the security code each time you use a new or different SIM card. You only have to do it once for each SIM though. It's quite a useful feature because it means that anyone stealing the phone would need to know the security code to be able to use it. Obviously most robbers will be trying the default number, which as PRKING says, is 12345.
The security number can be re-set to 12345 with a cable and a bit of free software though, so not THAT much of a deterrant!

i think i changed my security code but i cant remember it, so what do i do? Even when i put a orange pg sim in it doesnt work. it never used to do this before so why now? i canged my contract to a sim only on tmobile but cant use it. do u think id be better off buying a new mobile?

If you can't remember the security code then you need to send it off to Nokia who will try to reset it for you. Its doing it because you have the option to lock the phone when a new SIM is put in.

last time the firmware was updated on my phone it reset the security code.

I think they would probably be able to do it at a nokia service center. And i'd say dodgey dave on the market could do it too.

We've told you how to sort it? Unless you can remember the Security Code, you are going to need to have it re-flashed or serviced.

If that was a cry for help in the psychological sense of the word then you really are in the wrong community, we're not that nice to each other. let alone people we don't know.

try the http://www.samaritans.org.uk/ or maybe speak to your GP?????
