I got a sharp GX10 for my birthday in April, and about a month or two after I got it I noticed it started to switch itself off... It either does this when its just left alone in my pocket or when I finish using it and put the cover down, it does it even when it's got a fully charged battery so it can't be a problem with the battery life.

I was really quite pleased with this phone as I can use it for taking photos and now I will probably have to replace it for something else, which is a real bummer as being a PAYG customer I don't get as big a choice of mobile phones as a Pay Monthly customer... and this is the only phone Vodafone do on PAYG with a camera!

Does anyone know what the problem might be with the phone, or should I just take it back where my parents bought it and get it checked out/replaced?

Well I checked the battery, it was in properly but yesterday it was still switching itself off every so often.

Of course now I've told my parents about the fault they tell me that the phone was actually a present from my half-sister who was given it when she went to a Carphone Warehouse exhibition! She didn't want it so she gave it to me... So I'm going to have to take it into Carphone Warehouse in Ealing and explain that to them because I haven't got a receipt.

The other thing is I believe the GX10 is actually the wrong phone for me as I'm a PAYG customer I should really have the GX10i... so if I can I will ask them to exchange it for the GX10i.

definitely sounds as if it is faulty then

my sony has been playing up lately, a few elastic bands around the battery cured it!

Went to Carphone Warehouse and they checked the phone on their system by scanning the barcode on the inside cover... the system said it wasn't one of their phones... So Carphone Warehouse were going to charge me about £70 to have it repaired!

I will talk to my half-sister to see if she can get in contact with the person who gave her the phone... then if she says she can get it replaced that's great... if not I will have to talk to Vodafone about it and see if they can replace it... Only bugger about it is I will be without a phone whilst it goes through the postal system!

The saga continues, I'll let you know how things get on!

My dad spoke to my half sister yesterday, she said she'd get in contact with her friend, but haven't heard back from her yet, so my poor old phone is sitting with all its accessories in an open, unmarked Jiffy bag next to my computer, awaiting it's fate!

Poor thing!

Its happening to my phone aswell (Siemens A50). It switches itself off when you leave it for around 5 minutes, and its fully charged up. It also happenens with my sisters phone (nokia 3310) alot. I know this might be a bit early for even thinking about it, but....phone virus? Its happening too far too many people. Heres what backs it up-I turned on my fone and left it on the desk beside my pc monitor, after 5 minutes there was interference on the screen - like when your on the phone or recieving a message my phone gave out a beep then turned off. This happens every time I try it near the monitor. So any explanations for this?

I took it openly since im Indian.

I just checked the back and well the batterys qutie a bit loose like so ive wedged some plastic against it.... so gonna see for a week or 2 if it doesnt go off

Well, this is very strange, I was going to phone Vodafone yesterday to ask where to send my phone, but on Saturday night I tested it to see if it was still giving me problems... Rather oddly, it's worked fine since then! Maybe it needed a few days rest (like me! lol!)

With new phones, the 'insides' are becoming more and more complex.

They are not also packed with all the special things what make the phone today, but the software is also far more adanced. With hundreds of thousands lines of code, more and more bugs in the coding are expected - This could cause phone to switch off.

Another thing, as i was saying before... phones now contain faster processors etc and with no room for fans like computers etc.... things can get hot in there! For the phone, a natural safety procedure is the switch off.

And finally.. build quality... Build quality is getting worse in new phones and little problems are overseen. With my 3510i, the battery contacts can sometimes disconnect..(like the indian with the 6610).

Oh and about phone virus's. The simple answer is no. They do not exist for the moment! The software cannot handle a Virus(yes sounds studid!) but it carnt. A virus would 'ask' for a complex procedure which couldnt be carried out.
A phone like the SPV however could have a virus! Not your 3310 though.
When i had my Sagem mw3020, it would cause interferece with my screen. And when i was in bed, the speakers too. They would make wierd beeping noises. I think this is to do with the phone refreshing etc and not to do wwith a virus or any other conspiracy.

wel i dunno, they mire alredy exist in sum way. my m8 had a 3310 that got a random message from sum1. wen he tried to open it it wu do they 'mesage deleted' animation and go bak to the messages, without the message being deleted, so it stayed there until he got a new fone. so txt viruses mite xist...

That's more likely to be a txt message produced by software that the phone's software in uncomfortable with. I know cos that's what happened to my Siemens A50 and when I rang Siemans they said they'd courier me a new handset the next day with a software update.

Yes, before I was immersed in the colour screen/polyphonic ringtone revolution, I used to have a 3310 and it would crash sometimes, I think this was due to something to do with text messages and Nokia's software...

Was really annoying as I could never get those fascias off to take the battery out to reset the phone!

you usually get these problems with the first versions of new phones whereby the software is full of bugs
