Washed iPod
Voodoo Child
12-07-2008
I have an original first Gen iPod Nano... and somehow it ended up in the wash. (Something I am furious about as I clearly remember taking it out of my pocket and putting it on the kitchen side, next to my mobile phone before I went out last night). Now, I think it was in about 20 minutes and my Mum managed to turn it off and get the iPod out.

I've put it in the airing cupboard, but what are the realistic chances of it working again? I love my iPod... it really is my baby and I don't want to buy a new one... as they always release new ones around September/October time if it is broken...

Anyone know ways to get them working again?

do not charge
do not turn on.
let it dry in a warm place for a week
bone dry
bone bone dry
its harder because its hard to get the case off the thing.
all moisture must go.
if it dries and you are patient, it may revive.

Ok thanks.

I tried to turn it on when it came out of the wash, though.

I won't touch it again.

If nothing happens by the time I'm paid at the end of July then I'll get a new one.

if you have to replace, get a walkman 72x or something, the sound quality is much better, and included headphones are much better as well. ipod sound tends to be rather thin...

plastic cased ipods were easier to pry apart a bit for drying. the tabs are still used in the aluminum ones but bending the case is a problem. doesn't bounce back like the plastic or steel. ah well it is how it is. but many people have had their ipods come back to life after thorough drying, so just give it time.

oh supposedly covering it in a bowl of uncooked rice will act like a desiccant

My Mum once dropped her mobile phone down the toilet!!! Luckily the toilet hadn't been used! But the phone was totally soaked with the water and refused to work for probably a week or so until it eventually did start but it did act very strange at times (i can't remember if it crashed or lost signal or something) but it actually turned out that the SIM card was causing these problems. Fitted a new SIM card and the phone has been fine ever since!!

i remember a good few years ago I intentionally placed my mobile in a pint of lager, mainly cos I didnt like it. left it there for an hour and took it home, washed it under the cold water tap and left it overnight. It started up no problem the following day. Then, because it started up, I threw the pesky thing against the wall, and still it worked!!! -

Now, mobile these days cannot withstand being dropped.

Talk about tempting fate! My Mum tried to use her phone yesterday but couldn't hear anything through the ear piece. It turns out there must be a bad connection with it as the hand free kit works fine.

It's over a year ago since it fell down the toilet so it can't be anything to do with that, but talk about tempting fate. I mention on here that it is all working fine and it goes and breaks!!!

If you can open it up, speed up the drying time with a hairdryer

on barely warm, heat is bad for the battery, and blowing is bad. you may blow moisture deeper into the unit

am not sure i would be comfortable using a phone that has been down the toilet.

as you have tried to turn it on already there is a good chence you have fried it. Best of luck though. Its crap when you damage the things you really like using.

A mate of mine had his put through the washing machine not once - but twice in the same day (don't ask why) and then dried in the dryer as well - outcome... well it has a slightly stained screen and occasionally freezes but other than that works fine.

Hope yours is ok

My old ipod met with some water in my bag (only thing the water touched, go figure), and it worked, but the battery wouldn't turn off at all, so when I switched it off, the battery still drained and overheated. Sold it on ebay for £25 for spares/repair.
