I have a Yamaha surround sound system which has 6ch discrete inputs and I have set it up with front, rear, centre and sub-woofer speakers. However, it does not have an optical input and I would have liked to be able to make use of the optical output from my Grundig HD receiver.
I have searched the Internet for an optical to 6ch converter but have found nothing. Can anyone tell me if such a device exists.

Do u have a spare coaxial input? If so use a single optical to digital converter and u will get Dolby 5.1 from your HD box which is the best that can be received via cable/satellite at the moment. You would only need to use the 6 ch inputs if u had a Blu-ray player that decoded and output the latest HD audio codecs.

Typically, having asked the question, I have now found the Klipsch DD-5.1 digital decoder which seems to do what I want and more. Don't know if it's available in Europe though.

It only has discrete inputs.

I would be very surprised if the surround amp didn't have a digital coaxial in.

- Here's an example of a Digital Optical To Digital Coaxial Converter

Ok, now I understand your problem; it was designed to be partnered with a seperate DD processor in it's day. You might strike luck & find an old Processor to partner it but I think a new one would be quite expensive?

To be quite honest you would be better off buying another Amp. I have just done a quick ebay search & this is a great Amp. for what it will sell for ( I had one before I bought my £1000 Denon) & I found it to be excellent. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/YAMAHA-DSP-AX6...3286.m14.l1318

Failing that you might consider going for a new one if budget permits; a Onlyo 605 or 606 would be a good investment at around the £300 mark

Indeed, that makes sense. I hoped that perhaps there would have been a relatively inexpensive decoder around. The Klipsch unit sells for about 150USD but I can't find it in Europe. Maybe it was never imported.
Probably time for a new sound system but with the other half not appreciating the difference between mono and stereo, I shall have to choose my moment carefully.

I eventually opted for a Yamaha RX-V363RDS and two 6m lengths of optical cable to connect the Freesat HD receiver and Pioneer DVR to the amp. The result is astounding and I would certainly recommend any other DD 5.1 beginners to follow the same path.
