I have a reasonably good quality 5.1 set. At the moment, it's 3.1 because I cant have the rear speakers due to the layout of my lounge.

Is it worth having the 2 rear speakers at the front anyway, or will this be stupid? Or am I just best to keep the 3.1 how I have now - F-LEFT, F-RIGHT, and CENTRE.

Cheers

LOL copycat. Did you copy and paste my 5.1 slang of 'f-left/f-right' from my posts?!

No don't use the rears at the front it will simply confuse the effect. Is there no way thay can be used at the rear as the sound effect improvment would be great?

I have the same problem, though my television has a DD 5.1 decoder built it.

I have my surround speakers mounted either side of the television and have no problems with the sound.

so you have the rear speakers at the front?
i have no option to change any settings to have all 5 at the front, i simply wire each speaker into the sub, 2 of them go into whats called REAR1 and REAR2 so i cant change those to front also.

If you have no problems with the sound that should come from the rear coming from the front along with front effects which are timed differently from the rears, fine, personaly it would drive me nuts & frankly it's pointless, you would be better with just the front 3.

Yes because you should at least get a better quality of sound than you would from the TV alone & the centre Dialogue channel will focus/steer you to the screen.

i could actually wire 2 speakers for LEFT, 2 speakers for RIGHT, and 1 central. You put the wires into the back of the sub and clip them in, so i could just tangle up two speaker wires together and put them into one space on the back of the sub? Is there any point?

If you can't fit the surround speakers behind the sofa, you can put them either side of the sofa, facing each other, so they act like side speakers rather than rears.

Quite a few cinemas use this arrangement.

Yes.

Basically have them in a line:

LS>LF>C>RF>RS

The LF, C, RF are contained within the television set, of course.

It may not please the purists but it sounds OK to me.

to do this, i would have to have the speakers on the floor which i doubt would do anything, plus one of them would have to go across the kitchen door!

I would not recommend you do this as you will be altering the impedance presented to the Amp. which could cause problems.
