Hi

We are about to buy a new LCD and plan to keep the Sky+ dvd etc inside a wooden unit and are looking to see if there is a remote control that will work through the doors so we won't have to leave the doors open all the live long day. Anyone know of such a thing?

Thanks

You will obviously not be able to use a conventional infra red remote through the doors so you will need some form of IR extender system or wireless system which are available but tend to be expensive. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of these can point you in the right direction.

Also something to consider, most cabinets have insufficient ventilation which makes your kit run hot & become troublesome or die early so make sure it's well vented by cutting more holes in the back or fit a small extractor fan in the cabinet.

I would second this. Ideally you won't put it in a cabinet but if you do then make sure it is very well ventilated or you will be back on here complaining about how unreliable Sky+ is.

Ideally you would take the doors off and make sure the back is open - that would also solve your remote control problem.

We do this all the time professionally, rarely have problems with overheating. IR repeaters can run from about £40 for a Philex one, sometimes available from B&Q, or else a universal remote with the facility would be the Harmony 895 at £199, obviously this is a better way, as you only have 1 remote.

Might look naff but you could replace the wooden doors with glass ones
