I was talking to a friend today whose involved in home electronics and we got around to talking about LCD/Plasma t.v.'s. I was astonished when he started talking about this huge Turkish conglomerate Vestel, and just who they make t.v.'s for. Apart from the usual supermarket specials, Techwood Tesco Asda Argos etc. they also badge up for the likes of Hitachi Toshiba Grundig, etc. etc. the list goes on and on. They tend to concentrate on the smaller displays for the moment though not exclusively, so whilst many of us may think we are watching our t.v. manufactured by one of the big brand players we may in fact be watching a t.v. made in Turkey by Vestel.

Good ole Vestel As you may know, big name brands already put their names on Vestel's (wonderful but flawed) PVRs, like Hitachi, Sharp, Wharfedale - as well as the Argos/Asda/Tesco models Digihome and Techno-this-n-that.

We've been talking about this for ages!

Grundig went completely bust a number of years back, and is now just a name, 100% owned by Beko - one of Vestels main Turkish rivals.

Toshiba buy their smaller sets in, but make the larger ones themselves.

Hitachi have bought most of their sets in for decades, only rarely have they made their own sets.
