Time For A New TV :D
After having a 34" CRT in the corner for 5 years its time for a new TV...
The TV will be used for SDTV, PS3 and Blu-ray movies. I need 1080p, Freeview. Needs a steady, half decent SD picture too. Viewing distance ranges from 6ft to 9ft depending on which couch you're sitting on so I'm thinking 37"-42" Max price is £800 Would anyone recommend these TV's: Sony KDL40D3500 £600 Has 24p Sony KDL40V3000 £650 The TV doesnt have to be perfect as i'll probably go out and buy a 50" plasma in about 3 years time Recommendations Please ?

The TV has a 34" screen, maybe sold as a 36" or similar size but the actual screen is 34"...and so basically you're saying either I go for a smaller tv than I have or forget having a good sd picture...my uncle has a viewing distance of about 6 or 7 foot from a 50/52" pioneer kuro and that looks amazingly good when playing SD...why exactly will a 37" look bad from 6-9ft?

If you're happy watching SD that close then fair enough, it's fine for HD though - and you should be much closer for HD to get best results from it. Are you sure you're not watching your uncles set on HD?. |

Minimum suggested viewing distance is about 2.5 times the screen size for SD, closer than that you see the defects and artifacts in the picture from the upscaling, and MPEG compression used, or (in the case of a CRT) you can see the lines that make up the picture.

Both have positives and negatives, it's really a matter of personal choice. |

Plasma's are slightly better than LCD on SD pictures, this is simply because (like a CRT) the picture isn't as sharp as an LCD, so the defects tend to 'blur together' somewhat, smoothing their edges and making them less visible. For the same reason LCD are usually better on HD, where you want the sharpness.
