A buddy of mine is keen to get an iPhone 3G off ebay. Now I'm pretty sure the firmware hasn't been cracked yet, but do sellers like this look legit to you?

I personally said he should wait for the PAYG in December, but he wants one now, but on Orange.

I read somewhere the Firmware has indeed been cracked, however there isn't a 'user-friendly' pwnage tool been released yet to allow individuals to do it easily. This will no doubt happen in the not too distant future.

It might be worth dropping him a message to find out how he's had them unlocked.

Also it is worth asking yourself do you really want to spend best part of £500 on an iPhone 3G? When you can get it free on a £45 contract? Do the maths you'll probably find the cost of this unlocked handset + whatever tariff you're currently on will be much more than the £45 x 18 months with O2.

unless i've missed something on the listing, it isn't claimed that these phones are unlocked.

i must say i agree with this. this iphone will be around £500 including shipping plus the relevant custom duties whereas you can get it here for £99 plus £630 for service (£35 x 18) and that includes a heap of minutes and texts for 18 months.

chocolate boy, wouldn't your friend spend £135 on an internet bolt on during the 18 month period (£7.50 x 18) and £100 on calls in 18 months?

the only way i can the plan being advantageous is if your friend needs to have the freedom to change to a newer model during the next 18 months or might want to stop making phone calls or surfing for an extended period.

Chocolate_Boy asked about cracking firmware. Is this not another way of saying 'unlocked'?

Point taken tho.. the listing does not mention it.
