Connecting a 2-channel dvd player to 5.1 surround sound system

I have a brand new Onkyo 5.1 AV receiver with Wharfdale 5.1 speaker system and a 2-channel DVD player. The DVD player has just one set of RCA (1 red and 1 white socket) output connectors.

I have connected the system and am getting sound from the center and both front speakers but not from the surround sound (rear) speakers. Even when I use the in-built radio tuner and watch cable TV (the cable box has just one set of RCA connectors like the DVD player), the surround sound does not work.

I have used an inbuilt system of the AV receiver called Audessey to automatically configure the speakers and the connections are all good. The AV receiver has the Dolby ProLogic II option for surround sound.

Do I not get any sound from the rear speakers because I do not have a compatible 5.1 DVD player or is there any other possible explanation?

If you only have analogue Red/White RCA connections then you are only going to get stereo. Does the DVD player not have an optical (Toslink) or coaxial (Orange RCA) digital out? A number of surround amps/recievers I have seen have a setting that routes the stereo input to the rear speakers as well to give a pseudo matrix effect but this will still not be 5.1 and can feel a bit odd.

select Dolby Pro Logic II on your amp.this should give you surround sound from stereo inputs.

Rear speaker sound is usually quite subtle and unless you have a genuine digital sound output the best you will get is ambient sound.
Check the amp is set up correctly

Even PL2 wont be as good as the genuine article.

Stereo inputs will only give PL1 or PL2 at best.

Adjustment of the rear speakers may improve it but its only a digital output that will give you proper independent full frequency rear speakers
