Thomson and Top UP TV

I Have bought a Thomson freeview digital recorder which does not allow me to record on the Hard drive unless i have a top up TV subscription.

Is there anyway around this problem without getting Top Up TV?

Where did you buy the DTR?.....and have you put the card in?
