Due an upgrade with Orange....

Hi there. Im 15 months into an 18 month contract and therefore ready to upgrade my phone. Ive been looking around but just wanted everyones opinions on what phone I should get. Im not after anything too fancy. Just something that you can stick some music on, and has a good camera. Though Ive only got a pretty basic Sony Ericsson the now, so something a bit flashy would be nice!

I was thinking about an LG Viewty. Is it worthwhile getting? Or is there better phones? I liked the look of the N95, but it'll cost me £100 and Im not too keen on that

@ the bolded bits lol

The Samsung u900 Soul is a nice handset, just give 150 a call and they'll go through everything with you if you tell them your requirements.

The Viewty is good but I couldn't get in to it - I just don't do touchscreen phones. The N95 is better in every respect but as you say it'll cost you £100 (although I'm a bit puzzled as a phone of that 'age' isn't likely to cost that much.

Have a look around on: www.mobile-phones-uk.org.uk

Bear in mind any outstanding months on your existing contract will be added to your new contract. e.g. if you have 3 months left and you renew now an 18 month contract will become a 21 month contract.

The cost of your new handset depends on a number of factors:

1. The real value of the handset

2. The tariff you sign up for (and length)

3. The amount you have been spending over and above your tariff cost

These factors combined give you a scoring.

If you are on a really cheap tariff, never make calls over and above your monthly allowance and are not willing to commit to a maximum length contract then i'm afraid you are little value to the phone company. This is reflected in their unwillingness to fully subsidise your new handset.

My advice is don't upgrade until the last week or so of your contract. You'll get a much better deal.

For example, I was offered an upgrade (with a phone I didn't really want) and £5 off my line rental (so from £35 to £30), one month before the contract expired. I obviously didn't take it up.

With a week left on the contract, I got in touch and they gave me the phone I wanted, an 8gb memory card and line rental at £20 per month!

So don't do it too early!

Yes, I would agree.

However, you need a fall back position. i.e. do your research and look into what other companies are offering. Then (realistically) think about where you would like to be with Orange, that is:

How much you would like to pay each month
How many minutes you need
How many texts you want
Extras & Add-Ons

Then what handset you fancy.

Propose a package (again be realistic, look at what a new customer will be asked to pay, remember, you're not going to get EVERYTHING for free, it's about negotiating back to a position where you are better off than you were before and better off than moving to another provider).

Some folks are deft at bargaining, others not so. The customer service agent has a bottom line which he cannot go below, he'll play a game of cat & mouse with you (pretending to put you on hold while he speaks to supervisor) but his job is to get as close to the top line as possible, that's where their commission is greatest.

As previous poster suggested, your bargaining strength increases the closer you get to your contract end.

Thanks for the responses. I decided to get an LG Viewty for free. And Im now into another 18 month contract which is £22.50 a month for 400 mins and unlimited texts. Its left me in a much better situation that I was before. Cant argue with that
