When I was in Amsterdam, I lived off McDonalds - was different to the stuff here, and the mayo was tastier - we just wanted something quick and handy for when we were drunk and hungry

You asked a question, I answered it.
Does my reply not make you (even the slightest bit) see why people might eat in fast food restaurants abroad?

I love French food! Eating in Paris is one of the best things about it although admittedly I'm not a snails fan.

In general discovering food when abroad is one of my favourite things, including supermarket discoveries - I remember spending hours in the hypermarket on one holiday in the South of France which most people probably think is a strange thing to do on holiday!

On a McDonalds note (as that seems to be where this thread has gone!) the Greek McDonalds do souvlakia, toasted sandwiches and a McFeta burger that are all worth checking out!

I've changed my mind, give me a McFeta burger now.

In the States I love a good Reuben Sandwich - toasted with proper corned beef or pastrami, sauerkraut and swiss cheese. Delicious.

I also love Eggs Benedict for breakfast.

Have you tried a Stage Deli Reuben? They're immense! It took me about an hour to eat it all.

I remember on my first trip to the US in 1977 that i was taken to an Arby's eatery..... and was totally gob-smacked at the size of this Roast Beef sandwich i was presented with!! Perfectly cooked lean Roast Beef with pickles and Mayo. Never seen them here in the UK though!!

I don't think your analogy holds up.

When I visited the US then I ate at plenty of places that would be deemed "acceptable" by the foodies on these boards. Clam chowder at the harbour front, American breakfast at a traditional diner, banquet for two in Chinatown etc etc.

I didn't however lose sight of the fact that the US is the birthplace of fast food culture. If you're going to do the Americana thing then I think you're obliged to visit places such as McD's, Wendy's and Taco Bell. I also wanted to make sure I shopped in a 7-11. My only regret was that I wasn't able to get to a White Castle.

Everyone seems to be hung up on authentic cultural experiences these days. Forget about Chaat from a cart by the side of the road in Mumbai, get yourself to a downtown McD's in Los Angeles!

Its not that - its just when someone started a thread on holiday food, I was rather dismayed to hear so many people talking about Maccy D's and KFC........ That is NOT authentic holiday food IMO.

In fact Amercian cuisine, as varied as it may be, is not truly authentic in any sense of the word? I guess if you go to a restaurant that serves a particulalr cuisine then its authentic.... American food just doesn't sit well with me as a "cuisine" - its normally junk food and lots of it!!!

Don't get me wrong, I am partial to the odd fast food takeaway, I love Texmex and I *obviously* don't eat as healthily as I should. But I find it shocking so many people reckon the best food they have had on holiday involves a fast food chain or bloody pancakes

What utter rubbish. America is also the birthplace of gun culture. It doesn't mean that you have to pop a cap in someone while you're there!

You should experience the best things about countries you visit not the worst. McD's, KFC and other such swill represent the worst in America 'cuisine'.

Sadly I slept in on my last day so was running late for the airport. I had however planned to tick this off my list as well.

On the subject of McDonalds...

In Sweden they do pasta in McDonalds. It's called (I kid you not) McAronie!

Well it made me laugh.

On my first trip to the US, i made a point of avoiding places like McClowns and The Colnels, because we had them here in the UK. That said, there are plenty of other places where you can indulge in a fast food fix such as Wendy's, Churches Chicken and Dennys..... which are all better than McD's or KFC.

I'm not above the odd fast food quick meal when i'm in the States, but i'm there for a couple of months at a time so i'm not going to eat at restaurants for all that time. Because I have my own place over there I cook a lot, however in the evening when we go out I like to go to the decent restaurants but even a lot of these tend to be part of a chain.
This is because once a place becomes popular the American savvy business brain kicks in and takes advantage of being "on to a good thing"and opens or franchises loads of identical clones of the original restaurant. Inevitably the quality suffers and then it just becomes like any other run of the mill place. By then it doesn't matter to the guy who's sold 50 or 100 franchises, he's made his money.
For an authentic American dining experience you really can't do better than a breakfast at a neighbourhood diner IMO.

You didn't even shoot anyone while you were there?? What a pointless trip. You might as well have gone to Blackpool for your holiday.

Exactly. When i was staying in Atlanta at an airport hotel where they didn't have a restaurant, they recommended this 'shack' just across the road. We all piled in there and got 'The Works' for about USD10.00 a head. We didn't eat for the rest of the day!!

Then you have either never been to America or if you have been all you ate was fast food.

American cuisine is no less authentic than the cuisine from any other country.

Well, much of the best food in the world is actually fast food by definition. I think where people start getting snobby about it is when it comes from a corporation. Lets face, that is silly.
