Try the panasonic DMR-Ez27 Records on minus plus and ram has freeview built in £100 at richer sounds. quote web price when buying

quality is very good on that recorder,i've bought one of those this week,but at 8 hours it's stretching the possibilities of any known dvd recorder,you are looking at lower than home recorded video tape quality.
For good results look at 2 hours,to a maximum 3 hours recording per dvd.
This recorder does use double layer discs too,so you could go to 4 hours or 6 hours on one of those and still have good quality.
8 hours is just wasting your time really in my view,and you'll see by the results,i started dvd recording and editing about 9 years ago so have a fair bit of experience in that time,certainly enough to know that 8 hours on a dvd doesn't work.

The 4hour Long play setting isn't too bad on quality on the Panasonics, however, it is noticable poorer quality than the 2hour for obvious reasons. Anything more is streching it too much and the quality is crap.

I would just say that if you want it for timeshifting then a PVR is a far better bet. Even if you want say 90% timeshifting and 10% archiving I think you'd be better with a PVR until you can afford both.
