I need some help decifering which network is going to be best for the OH to go on for PAYG, that is cheap for cross net calls. She barely uses her phone - odd phone call and text a week (more for emegencies really.)

Can anyone give me an idea as to which network is the cheapest to be able to call all numbers (01, 02, 07) I have seen Tescos network prices with their friends rates, but it doesnt mention which network it piggybacks on - heard it was O2? is this right? What about the ASDA mobile network?

Tesco piggybacks to O2
Asda piggybacks to Vodafone

3 may be worth a look. Flat rate of 12ppm to any network

Also check the signal coverage in your area. No use getting a cheap PAYG phone if you cant use it cos you have no signal.

thanks for clearing up the asda/tesco question

I have looked at 3 for payg. yes, the 12ppm looks good, but they also keep the same charge for text messages (12p per text) which is more expensive than any other network.

Virgin Mobile's Daily Bonus PAYG will be pretty good.

15p calls to Landlines, Virgin Mobiles and Other networks
5p texts to Virgin Mobiles, 10p other networks

If you call for 5 mins you get your next 5 mins free that day, and the same applies to texts, send 5 texts, get the next 5 free that day

Vodafone is good for off peak calls. 30p for up to an hours calls to any network

I'm surprised VM have kept a normal PAYG tariff in addition to the Daily Bonus tariff. It's quite expensive comparatively - 40p a minute to other networks and 12p for xnet texts.

The only area it's better is 3p texts to virgin mobiles although daily bonus does it for 5p.

Since this thread's already going, can I ask what phone people would recommend for PAYG? I have an SE W850i on contract but only use a fraction of my minutes. So when the contract runs out I want to get a good, no-frills phone (ie no need for music players etc) that has a sensible interface, long battery life, is reliable and doesn't come up with "ct" every time I try to text "at".

Any suggestions?

Bulky, has a tendency not to update the calls list, predictive text is frustrating (like always offering "ct" when I mean "at"), randomly switches on the music player... not sure if it's the phone or the network (Voda) but I also have days when texts take hours to get to me yet ones I send arrive instantly.

So yes I could just put in a PAYG SIM but it's quite an annoying phone.
