You will need a tri-band phone. But, and its a big one. What you will be able to do will depend in which part of the country you are in. Brazil didn't originally use GSM, so GSM networks are not available everywhere. You should check with your service provider before you go for details about the area you are going to. If you are going to an non-gsm area with T-DMA, they will recommend somewhere you can rent a handset during your stay.

I was just thinking of taking an unlocked phone and will be using a local sim card/international payg sim rather than my contract one from here,
so GSM is not available in all areas...i'll be in Rio and then a day or two at Igauza falls....would anyone know of any gsm issues in these areas? |

I'm told by a friend that TIM have a GSM 1800 service covering those areas. www.tim.com.br

GSM 1800 is the primary band used by Orange and T-Mobile in the UK (and a secondary band used by O2 and Orange) - the Ericsson K800i certainly works on T-Mobile so is 1800...

You be better off getting one of them simcards from ebay (GlobalSim) and dirverting you uk number to it, obviously check you don't get charged.
I have a globalsim and also an 0871 number and my uk mobile diverts so people can call me at UK Rates See this seller ... This item comes with phone also, but he does just the simcards for 9£. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ekit-Global-Tr...3286.m14.l1318 Free incoming calls in Brazil : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/International-...3286.m14.l1318 |
