I am a high user and have a Business contract with Vodafone and am wondering (in these days of dire financial hardship) if anyone has discovered how to go about getting cheap or even FREE directory enquiries when out and about.

Thanks.

If you get free phone numbers free on your contract you can call 0800 100100 or if you need a number that comes out of free call bundles you can call 01635 774800.

I dont know who runs the service, but the call is always answered with a short recording "Welcome to 0800 100100 free directory enquiries".

If you can go online with your handset.

www.yell.com

find your number, select it and call it.

Unless you have an iphone, its so lacking in other basic features, it would not surprise me if this ones missing too*

I have used this service a couple of times from my mobile
although through a PayG mobile you do pay for the 0800 call however the only catch is that you have to listen to
a 20 second advert before you get the number but it does work out cheaper than using most 118 services.

As WIDDY has said, using the landline number for this service is the cheapest option when calling from a mobile. Or you can nip into a phonebox and use the free number (if you happen to be out and near one) or of course use it free at home on the landline.
Yeah you have to listen to an ad, but it's targeted advertising and can sometimes be useful
